Scott isn't really expecting anybody to show. If anybody does, it'll probably be students from class-- he offered 'em a whopping letter increase in their grade to bribe them, and of course the permanent esteem of their favorite professor into the bargain-- though it's possible some people might stumble in on a whim, lured by the promise of free ( Read more... )

I'll give you a full letter grade raise if you can tell me why I'm here. Okay, so there's something to be said for listening to the god of love read Rilke and if you don't love a little Gaiman, I'm not sure you have a soul, but these things, in my experience, tend to filled up with pretentious hipsters and teenage girls who stole their daddy's rhyming dictionary to write about the boy next door, and these things aren't mutually exclusive. There's a reason I skipped if anyone in my school tried to host a poetry slam or a gathering of any kind. But then, that reason was mostly "It's high school," so there's no real harm in turning up to see what the island's residents have to offer.

Given that no one seems to be prepared to offer up their own work, it might not even be that bad. Sitting near the back, I sip my coffee and debate whether or not even chocolate's worth it.

"Do you have a pen?" he asked, eyebrows lifting. He didn't look away from her eyes, grinning back at the challenge.

It takes a moment to fumble around in my pocket for one, in part because looking away first seems like losing, but then I hold it out to him. "Bring it on."

Chase looked around the room for something to write on and scooped up someone's paperback book of old crappy poems and flipped to one of the empty pages in the back.

"Okay. Watch the-" he gestured to whoever was up there talking, "-give me minute, here."

He crossed his ankle over his thigh and used his leg as a writing pad. After two readings, he handed her the book back.

"All right. Knock 'em dead. Do justice to my words."

She doesn't really know how she's ended up sitting here listening to people read poetry, it's not exactly her scene, but here she is, sitting by Nico and actually kind of enjoying it.

"This is kinda cool," Karolina says in a tentative way when the applause for the last reader dies away a little. She glances sideways at Nico, checking in, seeing if her friend his bored or into it.

"Yeah," I say, nodding. "It's not so bad." They are some things being read that are boring or awful, but for the most part, let's be fair - the islanders seem to have pretty good taste. Besides, anything we can do to hang out that's a little different makes for a good change. "You should read something."

"Are you going to read something?" she asks, not quite yet willing to take up the challenge. Reading, and poetry, and literary type stuff has never been her thing really, but she likes speaking on stage so there's a good thing there. "What would you read?"
