Violet wasn't sure when it'd happened, to be honest. It was logical, and she could have anticipated the problem, but she'd spent yesterday feeling like she was just going to die - her first hangover - and now...

Violet Baudelaire lived in a treehouse.

The trees were decorated for winter.

Her tree was gaily hung with Candy Canes"I just want to ( Read more... )

Running around the island had its advantages, namely, that Jack got to see and meet a lot of people that he couldn't normally. He'd been going at a pretty good clip, winding his way on and off various paths when he heard the girl calling out in what sounded like a little bit of frustration and a little bit of fear. Figuring he'd go check it out, he headed toward the sound and found a tree hung with candy canes. Odd, but he'd seen worse.

"You okay up there?"

"I, uh." She looked down at- at the guy who was standing on the ground, and she turned to talk to him, careful not to touch anything. "I'm allergic." She cleared her throat. "I'm allergic to peppermint," she said guardedly, her eyebrows furrowed. "I guess- I mean, I've got to be careful."

Jack glanced at the tree carefully, trying to figure out the best way to get her down without touching any of the peppermint. Might not be easy.

"Do you have a sheet or a blanket or anything up there? If you wrap it around you and jump, I'll catch you and then I'll go up and get the peppermints down."

And it was a testament to how long he'd been around Daniel that the mention of the allergy didn't make him blink, though Daniel never had any food ones as far as Jack could remember.

"Jump?" She stared down at him. "I'm not jumping." It was about fifteen feet, and she shook her head. "And I don't want down, I just want them- I want them to go away." She bit her lower lip - it wasn't that she had any reason to distrust the man standing on the ground. ".... Sorry."

She stared back at the tree, a branch dangling far too close to her face. "I mean, I won't die or anything."

In training for the Special Forces, one of the trials a soldier had to go through was 'winter endurance',it was also one of the factors that caused a lot of good soldiers to drop from the training. For Sonya, the changes on the island gave her a chance to brush up on her training.

It was during such a time when she could just see a tree (complete with a tree house) covered in candy canes. Not the strangest thing she'd seen thus far, but from how the canes were situated, it looked like it could be a nuisance to get in and out of the place. Hearing a young woman yell out in frustration, she walked a little closer.

"Don't like candy canes?" It was a simple question. That was the only reason she could think of why someone would be that frustrated, she also wondered why she didn't try to remove them herself.

There were very few people that Violet blatently didn't like on the island, and Sonya Blade was, in fact, one of those. "Go away." She turned, and her bare fingers brushed against a candy cane, and she knew that she was seconds away from breaking into hives.

Oh jesus christ, and Sonya thought she could hold a damn grudge. But then of course, there was the time in Outworld when she was forced to call a truce with Kano, but that was from being desperate

Her expression didn't change. "Alright." she turned and started walking back. What the hell, she needed help, but somebody else would surely hear her.

"I- I'm allergic to peppermint," came the reply after she'd peered down to see the top of Cesario's head. "And I mean, I guess it's sort of- it's everywhere."

She sucked in a breath, and bit her lip tightly. "I- Uhm. I'm just- I'd rather not break out in hives."

For a moment only, Viola is distracted by the crunch of peppermint stick crushed in doggy jaws. She glances down, frowning. “Nay, Hunter; leave it,” she commands, and to his credit, the hound does. Back, then, to the task at hand ( ... )

Lady Baudelaire. Sometimes, Violet wondered exactly how she'd ended up where she had, to tell the truth. This place where there were knights and gunslingers and superheroes. "Thanks?" She was chewing on her lip.

"I mean, thank you. A lot." She stepped back quickly as the wind caught the branches above her, and although her heel crunched on a candy cane, she managed to avoid them falling on her - that is, except for one that merely grazed the back of her hand.

... Fifteen seconds later, the skin was already turning pink. All of the Baudelaire children, Sunny included, were very, very allergic. Still, she didn't say anything, because it wasn't like it would make any difference one way or the other.

It was a long way from the Compound to his and Meg's place, but never in the winter. It was just like wanders home from school in New Hampshire, better than, because here he always knew that there was a warm home at the end of it.

So Calvin was cheery when he came upon the tree house and a girl shouting at the sky. She was too high up to quite make out, but he called up to her as he bent to grab a candy cane.

"Everything all right?"

"Uh-" She called down to the boy that was standing outside on the ground that was littered with candy canes like land mines. "Well, not particularly, if I'm going to be honest." She peered down at him. "Lots of candy canes down there?"

Calvin looked around the snowy ground surrounding the tree house and had to nod. "Yeah...sort of," he called up as he kicked a few of them away into the underbrush.

When he looked up again, this time he recognized her. "Oh my gosh, Violet Baudelaire, is that really you up there?"

"Awesome," she said, and stepped forward, wincing as one piece of candy crunched under her foot.

"Maybe," she said, probably a little too guarded. "Who're you?" She hoped that not only would the decorations vanish when it wasn't winter anymore, but also the bits of them that'd been left behind, or else her life would be very, very hard.

I was out walking Mrs. O'Leary, my Hellhound, when I heard the plaintive shout and, coming around the corner, saw that Violet girl jump back from a rain of candy canes. I opened my mouth to say something snarky, because who's afraid of being hit by candy canes, really, but then I stop when I see her face.

She's really upset.

And no one gets that upset about candy canes unless there's a reason.

"Um... hi," I said, approaching cautiously. "You okay?"

"Yeah. I mean, I'm allergic to peppermint, and there's candy canes all over my house, but yeah, I'm okay." She's glaring up at tree, and shakes her head. Ridiculous, all of it.

"Peppermint?" I echoed. "The plant, right? Do candy canes contain real pepp--" They would if the Island wanted them to, I reminded myself. I'd heard enough about the Island to anticipate some of its cruelties, even if I was sometimes too slow to stop my mouth from moving. "Okay, right, peppermint," I said. "Can I help?"
