The first thing William noticed, of course, was the cold. Growing up in California made him a bit more sensitive to cold than he would have liked, but that had never been a problem on the Island. Until now ( Read more... )

The truth of the matter was that the change of weather brought conflicting emotions in Felicity. On the one hand, Christmastide made her miss her family even more, and the change of weather was a shock when it was only July back at home. But the other side, this was her favorite time of the year, and everything on the island was so festive, white and colorful, that she couldn't quite stay being sad.

A prior trip to the compound produced a bright red coat and red and green hat, when she saw a lad around Ben's age fall into the snow. She went over to see if something was the matter, but then she saw him move his arms and legs and knew there wasn't anything wrong.

"What're you doing?" She asked, curious.

William looked up to see a young girl wearing a bright red coat and looking at him quizzically. "Snow angels," he told her. "See, look." He got up awkwardly, his movement limited by the many layers of clothing.

The imprint in the snow was not as perfect as he would have liked, but if you squinted a bit and were liberal with your idea of what an angel should look like, it wasn't bad for a first-timer.

Angels weren't a very common ornament in 1776, let alone snow angels, but Felicity could sort of see an angel where he'd just fallen.

"Oh," she looked a moment longer at the snow before looking over at him. "I've never made snow angels, so I'm not one to judge."

Because really, if she were to have gone back home in such a state, her mother would have a fit to see her in wet clothes and outside.

"Me neither," he said, enjoying the way his breath clouded out in front of him. William stuffed his hands in his pockets and tried not to think about his now-wet backside, which was growing colder by the second. "Go ahead, give it a shot."

Penny was bundled up perhaps a little more than was necessary as she made her way to the Compound, several layers under a heavy coat, plus scarf and hat and gloves. After two other winters here, she admittedly didn't mind the cold weather as much as she'd used to, but it was still exactly that -- cold. All the same, she couldn't help smiling a little, especially not when she saw someone making a snow angel then realized who it was.

"Having fun?" she asked, arms folding over her chest as she looked down at William. The answer to that was fairly obvious, of course, but she couldn't help it.

William didn't have to look up to see who it was, of course. He could hear her smiling in the way she was talking, and he grinned too. "Yes, tons of it. I've never done this before." He wiggled his arms and legs again for emphasis.

"You're taking to it a lot faster than I did," Penny teased, debating silently for a moment before she decided to kneel in the snow beside him. She'd have to change sooner rather than later, but it was better than standing over him like that. "You gonna be warm enough staying on the bus?"

"We didn't really have Christmas in my family," he said, but not in a way that said he wanted pity. He had never seen it as a shortcoming, just an idiosyncrasy. "Plus we don't get snow like this in San Diego."

Propping himself up on his elbows, William considered her question. "I dunno. I don't actually know how cold it gets in there, really."

Gideon had just sort of came cross William while he was walking. He actually fucking paused to watch him for a few moments, a smirk hitching up on his face.

"You having a good time?" he asked, sounding just a little amused. It was fucking hard not to laugh, but he managed.

William stopped moving as soon as he heard Gideon's voice, simultaneously grinning and blushing as he realized how ridiculous he must look. "I... might be, yes," he admitted. "What can I say, we didn't get a ton of snow in San Diego. Also my mother kind of... waged war on Christmas."

Gideon knew that. He would never say he knew, because a lot of fucking questions would come out of that that he wasn't going to ever want to answer himself.

"Your mom hated Christmas?" he asked, raising a brow and acting stupid instead. "Why?"

"She just didn't like the commercialization. We celebrated it, but in September." It always made William uncomfortable when people were upset by that. He never objected to it the way Anita did, and didn't understand why his family's Christmas would matter to other people. But sitting in the middle of something out of a movie, he understood a little better. "So I'm pretty excited about Christmas this year, honestly."

Looking down at him, there is a smile on Ophelia's face. Her breath keeps making icicles in the long pieces of hair that catch on her mouth, but it's part of the season.

How she loves this season and it seems to make this place more real. "Art thou trying to find heaven once more?" she asks letting out a laugh.

Few voices could have been more welcome to his ears in that moment. "Yeah, but I think I might be going about it the wrong way by getting closer to the ground," he quipped. He looked up at her, trying not to notice too much how the cold made her cheeks pink and the way her hair blew across her face.

"Thou art having a great deal of ease in managing to dampen yourself," she teases before moving to step beside him before letting herself fall easily backwards into the snow.

"Perhaps it is below us? Or we need a good wash."

She was right - he was starting to feel the melted snow soaking his jeans. But he didn't much care, and knew that it was an easy thing to fix. "It's all around us," William said, fully aware of the cheesiness of the sentiment even as he said it. But once again, it didn't really matter. "But maybe we could do with a wash."
