Phedre has been spending some time in the compound, which even after all of this time, I still prefer to stay away from. Given how much like home we've managed to make our dwelling on the island, I see little need for the building. But Phedre, ever the social butterfly, has other thoughts and needs, and so she has spent much of the day in the ( Read more... )

Scotty is looking for something to read other than cookbooks, but all the bookshelf gives him is more books by Paula Deen, or Cosmo, or Playgirl. When he stumbles across Dealing with Jealousy, well, he decides to give the bookshelf some time to itself. Maybe Scotty should go sit in the corner and think about whatever it is he's done to deserve this kind of treatment.

His frustration is well-timed because when he turns around, there's a pretty hot, obviously gay guy parading around in the music video on the television dressed in all black and looking very sinister. That's certainly worth a few moments of Scotty's time, though he can't help a little mental eye roll whenever a girl has her hands on the singer. Please.

In a much better mood now, he offers the unfamiliar woman glaring daggers at the jukebox a friendly smile. "I think we found this room's new theme song."

"Elua, I hope not," I said, rolling my eyes a bit as I turned toward the man with a wry smile. "I've nothing against the music, but I don't enjoy being targeted for amusement by inanimate objects." I didn't recognize the man, so I added with a grin, "If you haven't been here long enough to have a similar experience, I do not wish it upon you."

If the accent wasn't a giveaway, the "Elua" is, and Scotty tilts his head at the stranger with a curiouser, and a touch warmer smile. "Oh, I've met the jukebox. It likes to play Queen and showtunes and someone I'd never heard of before, but she seems fabulous. Lady Gaga, I think."

He moves closer to her and extends a hand. "I'm Scotty Wandell. You wouldn't happen to know Alcuin, would you?"

Queen I had become acquainted with during my time here, and at least had some idea of what "showtunes" might refer to. However... "I've never heard of Lady GaGa either," I admitted. "Though I think I might remember if I had-- unless I am not mistaken, it is not customary for the nobility to also be performers."

At his question I smiled; it seemed between us Alcuin and I must know nearly the entire island. "He is my foster brother," I assented with a nod, "we live together."

When Alain walked in his eyebrows raised and his mouth drew up into an amused smile as he heard the deafening words pouring from the jukebox. He caught sight of Phedre and Joscelin and grinned. "This is not for me, I take it," he said, clearly relieved, although he didn't know how long he'd be able to stay and listen to it. Some of the more modern music was still not to his taste even if he'd grown used to it.

One or both!

I cast a glare at the jukebox as it starts up with the song again; surely this place has made its point already. I think the jukebox chiming in is wholly unnecessary.

"No," I say, shaking my head and turning towards Alain, doing my best to block out the loud noise of the song. "No, I am relatively sure there's only one person here that the song is intended for, and it is neither of us."

"Oh yes, you are both the very soul of wit," I said dryly, crossing my arms over my chest and glancing between them. I was not doing a terribly efficient job at hiding my bemusement; these things would always happen when there was an audience, wouldn't they? "It's hardly my fault I'm now being targeted by both these devices and the bookshelf. You, at least," I added to Joscelin, "should be nicer to me."

Raising his eyebrows, Alain met Joscilen's look and then turned his gaze to the song's intended. At the look on her face, he only laughed, failing completely in the process at hiding a smile behind his hand.

"And Phedre, you've done something to deserve its attention, have you?" he teased, "Or mayhap just the easiest target for it?"
