[gathering] Museum Grand Opening

Nov 24, 2009 13:03

For the occasion, Nessa had baked coconut crumpets. It was an experiment, but she was very glad of the result herself. She brought them to the museum in a folded cotton cloth. All hard work had come to this; a museum, and she thought it quite beautiful. She could already imagine the plants she would suggest Dick to grow there, welcoming the visitor ( Read more... )

Adrian had seen many museums in his time. He had made his own contributions in both donation and his personal presence. He was still most proud of his display at Karnak. This...well, this seemed a rather sad little display, though he supposed an Island of this size hadn't the time to achieve greatness the likes that Alexander had seen so many hundreds of years ago. He passed slowly in a graceful amble, chin held high as he studied each exhibit.

Saffron wasn't particularly interested in taking an emotional walk down the memory lane of island history. The building was very pretty, though, and she was mainly there to support Dick.

She came up smoothly beside Adrian as he studied one of the pieces. "What do you think of our island museum?" she asked, turning her head to study his expression.

Adrian glanced to the side to see his companion and could hardly help his bemused and slightly smug smile as he realized precisely who had deigned to speak to him. "Not going to begin our conversation with an attack this time?" he asked mildly, smoothing down his tie as he kept his eyes on the piece before him.

"I try not to do that to a person more than once if I can at all help it," Saffron replied, wry and maybe just a little sheepish. "It really tends to lose all its charm the second time."

At some point between greeting guests, Dick slips away for a quiet minute with the memorials to their friends. He lingers, soft-eyed, over the pictures of Lian and Roy, and the bow Roy left behind, and lets himself miss him for the first time in months. It's different now, with Tim holding his heart, but Roy will always be his best friend and the love of his youth.

"You're still an asshole for leaving me," he murmurs, but there's a smile on his lips when he thinks of him, and his other favorite redheads safely home.

I'd not expected this museum to be such a bittersweet experience, but I guess I should have known. Coming away from a picture of Lucy and her siblings, I spotted Dick across the room, and I knew I had to come over and say hello.

"It seems appropriate I find you here," I said as I approached. "I haven't talked to you in far too long."

He expected to be interrupted, but somehow the 'I haven't talked to you in far too long' of an acquaintance when he's been thinking about his oldest, dearest, most beloved friend strikes a nerve. He makes a silent promise to Roy that their conversation isn't over and someday he'll hug his best friend and goddaughter again.

It takes a genuine effort of will to pull back from the intimacy of his thoughts to turn and greet Polly with a smile. "Hi Polly. It probably is appropriate since this," he says with a sweeping gesture to encompass the museum. "Is probably the reason."

"It's fantastic," I said, fervently. I looked back at the pictures. "I saw some old friends. It brought back good memories. I think I'll be coming back here."

And an idea was forming in my mind. I'd talked to William de Worde about keeping my goodbye letters safe, to be distributed when I disappeared. But they might be even safer here. This was an appropriate place for them.

In all honesty, there was little in the museum that Davos found of any interest. But he knew that it was important to Nessa and so he was there anyway, for her sake.

He stared at one of the exhibitions with an expression of complete concentration in the vague hope that he could draw some meaning from it.

Nessa walked to him with a great smile on her face, and linked her arm into his, pulling herself beside him. "You came! Thank you. Are you enjoying yourself?"

"I would not have missed it," he replied honestly, though that wasn't exactly what she'd asked. "You've done a fine job, here."

"It's Dick's project, really, but I am so glad he used me," Nessa replied, jokingly, and lauged. "I am more familiar with art exhibitions, of course, but I have been able to offer advice. I still intent to make him some more murals." She nodded to a wall. "That one is still a bit dull..."

If there was one thing Scotty loved, it was the pursuit of knowledge. If there were two things Scotty loved, they were the pursuit of knowledge, and free food. He wouldn't have missed this for the world.

He thought it a pity he had nothing to donate - the things he could've shown them, if he'd been able - but was content just to wander through, admiring the architecture and the exhibits, trying not to get sandwich crumbs all over the place.

It was tempting to grab a bucket of paint and write 'Hinc lucem et pocula sacra' on the wall, but Guy didn't have a bucket of paint, which was all that prevented him from doing so.

It was brilliant, this museum and it would be much more if people got more interested in it. And they would if he had anything to say in it. (And he did have anything to say it, every wednesday evening on the radio.)

To be quite honest, he expected more drinks, but one supposed one had to do with what one was given. Coconut crumpets in this case. He took a bite and made his way to the time-line.

"You look twitchy." Kim said dryly as he moved to stand next to Guy. "Though I admit, I'm surprised to see you here at all. I didn't think displays of history was an interest of yours." Making history tended to be more their thing, but there was little real history to be made on this fucking island.

"We're historians, Kim," Guy replied matter-of-factly, but with a grin on his face. "Where else would we be?"

"And I'd always thought we were spies." Kim said dryly in reply, though with an amused raise of his eyebrow.
