It had been over twenty-four hours since Logan's accident, and he was still struggling to remember things. Yes, there were moments where the fog seemed to clear, and sure there were names and faces that were slowly coming back to him- but it seemed like some of the most important people and events from his life were simply gone. ...Erased, as if ( Read more... )

Jack had taken the dogs out for a short run so he wasn't hovering over Logan. As he'd heard many, many times before, Logan didn't want to be taken care of. Except when he did. Now was clearly not one of those times.

When he'd gotten home, Logan was gone and Jack panicked a little as he looked around for the younger man. He started with Bohemia and then spiraled out, finally coming to the compound. When he saw Logan just sitting there, he sighed with relief.

"Hey," he said, coming closer with the same caution he'd had since he'd walked Logan to the clinic. "Did you go to the clinic again? Are you feeling okay?"

Of all the things to remember. With as skittish and distrusting as Logan was, Jack couldn't imagine that recalling murder, even if it had been a dream, was going to reassure the younger man.

"Yeah. I did," he said with a nod. "They hurt you. They were going to kill you. I had to do something. And then we were going to Canada to get married. We were going to see the whole world. But then we woke up."

We woke up," Logan nodded, more and more coming back to him. "And then we went to London- We went, and... You died. I was-"

Taken. He was taken, and he looked like he might fall apart as the memroy of his time with John came flooding back.

"Oh, Logan, don't," Jack said sadly, reaching to take hold of the younger man's shoulder. "Of all the things to remember...that one can stay gone. You shouldn't have to remember the most horrible things first."

Since the injury, Logan had kept Jack at arms length, but now finding himself faced with a memory far worse than anything his imagination could dream up, he moved closer.

"I changed my mind," he said quietly. "I want to go home."

His hand moved from Logan's shoulder to the back of his head. He smiled sadly, glad Logan wanted to go home even though he knew there was still so much for the younger man to recall.

"We can do that, too," he agreed. "I know you don't need to be taken care of, but for now? Let me. Just for a little while. I've got to do something or else I'm going to go out of my mind."

Honestly, he wasn't going to go out of his mind, he was already out of his mind with worry and fear. He knew that it would just take time, but he couldn't help but be terrified that it would be permanent and everything he and Logan had built would just be gone. Just like that.

"How are you going to take care of me?" Logan asked, finding something warm and familiar in the other man's touch. It was enough to make him move even closer, his hands braced against Jack's chest as he gave in and rested his head on the other man's shoulder.

"No one can fix this."

"I...don't know. But I'll think of something. I always think of something," he assured Logan, gently carding his fingers through his hair and wrapping his other arm around to hold Logan close.

"I love you, Logan. I'll do whatever it takes. No matter how long it takes. You're going to get better and it'll all be okay." Not that he believed it, but maybe if he said it enough times, he could convince them both.

The younger man said nothing, holding on and letting himself just trust the other man for a while. After all, how much worse could it get? What else did he have to lose?

"It'll be okay," he agreed. "Let's just go home."

Jack turned them around and started back the way they'd come. He let his hands drop away, then tentatively reached for Logan's fingers and hooked just one.

"What else do you want to know about?" he asked after a minute. "I'm not sure what you saw, or what you thought, but I can try to explain things." He paused a moment and looked over. "Anything."

"How did we fall in love?" Logan asked simply, not ready to talk about what he'd found- they could talk about that later when they were home.

"I don't know when you fell in love with me. It's complicated. We used to fight every time we ran into each other. You hated me. You hated me a lot. But then, one day, the island pulled one of its tricks and you could only tell the truth. We both said a lot of things, and we fought...but we wound up in bed together. And then we just kind of kept winding up in bed," he explained.

"And then last October I disappeared. I got caught in the Doctor's ship and I couldn't get out. No one even noticed I was gone...except you. By the time I got out and came to see you? You were so pissed. But it was because you were worried. No one worries about me. No one really notices what I do most of the time. Except you. That was when I fell in love with you, even if I didn't want to admit it at the time."

"I worry about you," Logan repeated, realizing that was true. He worried. He remembered worrying about other things- He remembered worrying for Jack.

"You were sick once- I remember that. You where in so much pain, and I couldn't help."

"Yeah. I got stung by a jellyfish," he nodded. "Worst pain of my life and there's nothing they could do for it. Apparently, even if we'd been someplace with an actual hospital they still couldn't have done anything. You took care of me, after. I was so tired and weak and you did almost everything for me. And it goes both ways. I take care of you when you're sick or hurt."

Logan nodded, tensing a little as their home came into view up ahead.

"Do I get hurt a lot?" he asked quietly.

"Kind of. I think it's because you do a lot. You run and hike and surf. And sometimes you do stupid stuff like walking on the edge of the roof," he said, unable to keep from chuckling softly.

"And things here are unpredictable. There's dinosaurs and caves and people who aren't what you think they are. It seems like one of us is always getting hurt one way or another. It's not every week or anything, but more than the people who live happy little lives and don't do much. I'd die if there wasn't something with a little bit of a risk to it to do. Getting hurt just happens sometimes."
