and another one gone...

It wasn't the first time Saffron had woken up expecting to be curled up against someone only to find she was alone in the bed. It probably wasn't the last, either. Right then, though, that didn't matter one rutting bit ( Read more... )

"Helen? Hey, Hel, what's wrong?" Jogging over to her, Johnny realized she'd been crying. On top of her eyes looking swollen and her face being red, Helen's hair was messy and she was wearing a shirt, several sizes to big.

Sitting down next to her on the porch of the hut, he leaned in, trying to offer her comfort.

For once, Saffron wasn't bothering to hide her emotions. She just didn't have the energy. Tomorrow, or maybe even later today, she'd be able to pull it together enough to be her usual self, if a bit melancholy. Just then, though, she wasn't doing anything but wallowing in her misery.

"Warrick's gone," she said in a watery voice, leaning against Johnny.

Bridge did not have the best of hearing. Although his genes had been mutated while still in the womb, his ears had remained mostly unaffected. (He had not chanced experimenting how receptive they were to psychic waves.)

Ric, on the other hand, had above excellent hearing thanks to the surveillance upgrade he'd been through before arriving on the island, and had an open database of voice patterns stored on his hard drive. He picked up the sound of crying and, more importantly, picked out that it was Helen. He barked and his display flashed red.

"What is it, boy?" Ric didn't have the ability to mimic human speech, but he could get his point across and led Bridge straight to Warwick's hut. That close, Bridge could tell it was Helen crying. Tentatively he knocked on the door, but ultimately let himself in. "Helen? Is that you?"

Saffron heard Ric barking, but it wasn't until Bridge walked in that she sat up, swiping the back of one hand over her eyes. "In here, honey," she called from the bedroom, her voice shaky.

It didn't take surveillance equipment to hear the shake in her voice, and Bridge headed into the bedroom without hesitation, sitting himself down beside her with an expression of pure concern on his face. "What happened?" he asked. "How can I help?"

Bridge's expression was so sincere and full of concern that Saffron had to fight not to crumple again. "It's Warrick, Bridge," she said, biting her lip momentarily as she tried to steady her voice. "He's gone."

Jack had been coming to see Helen about getting some time off from the club, but when he saw her on the porch all his own needs vanished. He walked up and wordlessly sank down beside her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She seemed so much smaller than usual.

"Hey, bao bei," he said gently. She didn't need to state the obvious. Warrick's shirt said it all.

The tone of his voice and the look on his face told Saffron she didn't need to explain to Jack what was wrong. Having to say it one less time was a small relief. "Everyone else leaves, and we're still here," she said softly in Chinese, resting her head against Jack's shoulder.

"We're here together, though," he replied, as if that were any consolation. This place had a way of making every disappearance as bad as the first, like pulling a scab off a barely healed wound and making the pain bright and fresh all over again.

There wasn't much else he could say, so he simply held on, waiting for her to think and grieve. He was with her however he was needed...and if that meant silence, so be it.

"There is that," Saffron agreed with a little sniff. It wasn't much, but it was something. Saffron had no reason to think so, but for some reason she felt like even if everyone else they loved left, she and Jack would always have each other. "I'm glad for that."

Nick had a normal schedule of activities on the island. Get up, find food, work out, find his friends, so on and so forth. He was on his way back up to the compound when he passed by Warrick's hut, and figured he might as well stop by, see if Warrick was up for a run or something. Always nice to have company.

He knocked on the door to the hut, weight shifting from foot to foot as he waited for his friend to come to the door.

At the knock on the door, Saffron's first instinct was to stay where she was, silent and still, and wait until whoever it was went away. She knew, though, that she couldn't hide away forever, and if it was someone looking for Warrick, they needed to know what had happened.

"Coming," Saffron called. She fixed her hair as she walked to the door, taking a moment to swipe at her eyes and compose herself before she opened it. But at the sight of Warrick's best friend standing there, she just about lost it again. "Oh, Nick," was all she could manage for a second, one hand lifting to grip the doorframe.

Well, that wasn't Warrick. It wasn't the first time Helen had answered the door when he'd gone to find Warrick, but something was different this time. His years of dealing with people on the worst days of their lives told him that something just wasn't right.

"What's wrong?" he asked, almost hesitantly. Any time something was not right on the island, it usually meant something bad had happened, and even though he didn't want to think the worst, it was difficult not to.

"He's gone," Saffron replied simply, knowing she didn't have to clarify which he she was talking about. "Just this morning." She stepped to the side, in case Nick wanted to come in and see for himself.

Abby was headed to Warrick's hut to give him a classic jazz record the shelf had spit out at her, since he was one of the few who would truly appreciate the genius contained on the simple disc of wax. She was already semi-anticipating the conversation they'd have, maybe even the argument given the unconventional arrangements.

She bounced up the steps to the door and knocked. He might be in there with Helen or he might be at her hut altogether, but she could go away or search elsewhere if needed.

Saffron was sitting on the bed when she heard the knock. Swiping at her eyes, she took a slow breath before answering the door. "Abby," she said, unmistakable sadness in her tone, and she couldn't bring herself to say the next words. She'd already said them a few times, and she didn't know how many more people she'd have to inform.

Her face fell when Helen answered the door in that condition. There was only one real reason she'd look like that and Abby knew it way too fucking well.

"No. No no no no," she repeated, like that would make him come back, which it clearly wouldn't.

She'd never been close to Helen, really, but she still hugged the other woman, because that was what she did. It helped her as much as the people she hugged, and yet it still didn't really help.

Saffron returned the hug, appreciating it even though it didn't really do much good. "I'm sorry you had to find out like this," she said, once they separated. "Though I reckon there isn't any good way to find out."
