It had been nearly a month since the weekend that Alcuin had spent with Giles in Terre d'Ange - or rather, thinking they were in Terre d'Ange, as completely incomprehensible as that was. And though there was nothing overtly wrong in their relationship, it was clear that things were different. Strained, somehow. Not the least of which being the ( Read more... )

"Easy," Daniel said softly, moving quickly to get some towels to wipe the liquid up. One was thrown on the forming puddle on the floor, one was placed on the table, and the third was offered to Alcuin. "It's just me." He offered Alcuin a soft smile.

Alcuin immediately felt foolish for being so jumpy, and he wiped at the wet spot on his trousers with the towel as he offered Daniel a weak smile. "Thank you," he said. "I'm not normally so clumsy."

"No, you're not," Daniel replied softly. "And I suspect it's rather redundant to ask if everything's all right." It clearly wasn't. "But I can offer you another cup of tea if you'd like one." Maybe Alcuin would take the chance to tell Daniel what was going on.

Alcuin nodded. "Please. I suppose I should wait for my trousers to dry before venturing out anyway..." He sat back down at the table, laying the towel gingerly in his lap.

I hadn't intended to startle Alcuin, but apparently I hadn't made my presence quite known enough. It's a bad side effect, so to speak, of years of needing to be light on one's feet to avoid being caught.

"Alcuin," I say, stepping past him to reach for a towel, which I then hand to Alcuin as I reach to right the teacup. "I didn't mean to startle." I do not know Alcuin to be so jumpy or easily caught off guard, but then, it happens to everyone, I suppose.

As soon as Alcuin realized it was Joscelin, his face turned a touch sheepish, though when he took the towel he managed to offer him a small smile. "It's all right, I'm not usually so clumsy." He mopped up the tea and then dabbed at the spot on his trousers.

I step away from Alcuin, gathering more towels to clean up the tea which had spilled to the floor. No, he wasn't usually so clumsy, and my curiosity is piqued. I do not claim to be as observant as Phedre or Alcuin in the dealings of others, but I am not so unskilled as to not notice that something is not right. "Are you well?" I ask softly. There is little point in trying to avoid asking.

Alcuin took a breath, and looked at Joscelin.

He was tempted to tell him what had transpired, if only because he thought that he might have some counsel that would help Rupert. After all, he understood such a situation better than anyone else could.

But still...

"Joscelin," he finally said, "if I tell you something, will you trust that I have kept it from Phedre for what I consider to be valid reasons?"

The sound of the cup spilling and the sight of someone jumping startles Scotty, and he jumps. "Alcuin!" he starts, spotting the mess and going to grab some towels to clean it up. He passes one to Alcuin to clean himself up while Scotty kneels, taking care of the floor.

"Sorry about that," he apologizes with a friendly smile, looking up at him. "I didn't mean to startle you. I hope it wasn't hot?"

Alcuin immediately felt foolish for reacting so, especially when he looked down and saw the familiar man's kind, apologetic smile.

"No, it was hardly your fault," he assured him, dabbing at the wet spot on his trousers. "I'm not normally so clumsy..."

Appraising Alcuin more closely now, he raises his eyebrows. "Oh? Is something wrong? Or do you just have the dropsies today?" His expression evens out into a smile and he situates himself into a chair.

Alcuin mopped up the rest of the tea remaining on the table, then righted the teacup, before sitting back down himself. He offered Scotty a bit of a sheepish smile. "Just distracted, I suppose."

It was a more palatable answer than the truth. As kind as Scotty may be, somehow Alcuin did not think that he was signing up to take on the burden of Alcuin's real issues.

"You know ... usually I don't make people this jumpy until I start talking, not when I'm not even in the room." Patrick mused, as he stepped into the kitchen, and grabbed a towel promptly to start toweling up the mess. He gave the young man a keen, sharp look, before gently tossing him the towel. "I'll get some damp ones, to clean off your pants. Sit tight, okay?"

Alcuin simply stood there for a moment, both surprised and feeling quite foolish over his own clumsiness. As the unfamiliar man went to get more towels, Alcuin knelt down and finished mopping up the tea.

"I... am not usually so clumsy," he said, embarrassment laced into the round, French vowels. Nor so nervous, though he didn't draw attention to that.

"No, by the looks of you, I would guess not." Patrick answered, as he came back with a damp towel, which he put into the young man's hand. Heartbreakingly beautiful - in the way he knew people liked to either cherish ... or crush under their boot heel.

One look at him, and Patrick could assume the second had occurred. Recently. Human beings were such barbarians. His tone actually softened, and he nodded to the chair. "Why don't you sit down, while I make us more tea?"

Alcuin rose and offered the stranger a small smile. "Thank you," he said. "That's very kind."

He sat, and turned to watch him. He was vaguely familiar, in the way that so many people on the island were after so long, but Alcuin was quite sure he'd never met him. Handsome, and well dressed, which was something Alcuin could appreciate. Though the kind smile was even better.

"Nice to know I still have that effect on a guy," Jack said lightly, reaching for a towel to tidy up. It was obvious he wasn't, but he asked anyway- "You okay, Alcuin?"

Alcuin knelt down to mop up the pool of water on the floor and avoided looking up at Jack for a moment. When he finally did, he said, "I suppose I'm a little jumpy."

"I got that. What's going on?" It wasn't like Alcuin to be so...ungraceful. Jack had seen him upset before, but never like this.

Alcuin hesitated, then shook his head. "Nothing. I mean... it should be nothing." He rose and dabbed at the wet spot on his trousers, sighing, "It has been almost a month, I should be well rid of this damnable nervousness by now."
