Sunday afternoon clinic post

Jennifer was not in the best of moods. On the outside this meant that she was only slightly less perky than usual. On the inside, however, it was a different story ( Read more... )

Ronon hadn't meant to go into dinosaur territory - he wasn't frightened of them but he wasn't stupid either. But he'd been hunting and his prey had crossed over the barrier and he hadn't been inclined to leave off the hunt. The dinosaurs were kind of impressive and he'd encountered a couple of large herbivores before he'd ran into a larger one - which had killed the boar he'd been hunting. That had annoyed him but not half so much as the the spiny protuberances that ringed it's neck mainly because three of them had broken off in his arm when the dinosaur charged him.

He'd left them in there after he'd warned it off with a couple of shots, the first attempt to yank one out produced a disturbing amount of blood and it would be awkward to strap it himself. It was a long walk back to the clinic and he saw no reason to make it more difficult.

"Hey," he said when he got there, distracting Jennifer from her organising, managing to hide a grimace - the pain had only escalated as he'd moved and he wanted the things out of his arm now.

Jennifer stared at Ronon for a second before motioning him over to the examination bed. "Did you slip in the shower and fall on a dinosaur?" she asked, as she went to wash her hands and pull on a pair of gloves.

Ronon laughed and then winced all at once. Laughing was not a good idea right now. "No dinosaurs in the shower," he assured her. "Hunt went offtrack - the dinosaur ate my boar."

Jennifer just shook her head at that. "Do you know what kind of dinosaur it was?" she asked, examining the spines embedded in the skin. Hopefully they weren't venomous, though if Ronon had walked here from dinosaur territory and not had a reaction by now it was likely they weren't.

Elizabeth was not the most devoted parent to be, she knew that and flat out refused to feel guilty about it - she could hardly change it. But one thing she did do was attend the clinic once a month to see Dr. Keller.

Most of the complaints she had about her body changing on her proved to be normal pregnancy symptoms and that was at least reassuring - the last thing she needed was for the pregnancy to be difficult on top of everything else.

When she got to the clinic she took a seat on one of the beds without asking. Her back hurt and she had nearly waddled here. She was perfectly willing to wait for the doctor to be done with what she was doing, she just wasn't going to stand while waiting. "Quiet again?" she asked, it generally seemed so in the clinic.

Jennifer nodded. "As usual," she said, glad for something to do (and thankfully something that meant no one had gotten hurt). "How are you feeling? Everything okay?" She put the supplies she'd been messing with back in the cabinet and turned to Elizabeth.

"Tired and hot and huge," Elizabeth answered frankly because she thought that about summed it up. This was not really much different to last month so Elizabeth carried on with her list of new complaints that were no doubt normal as well. "And my back hurts unless I lie down and when I lie down I get reflux - if I don't already have it."

"At almost thirty weeks, I'd be worried if you weren't huge," Jennifer informed her. Elizabeth was gaining a reasonable amount of weight, which was good as Jennifer thought her slightly underweight to start with. "Try elevating the head of your bed--ask your husband to put blocks of wood about this big--" she gestured like so, "--under the head of the bed to raise it enough that your head and chest will be higher than the rest of you when you lie down. Try lying on your left side sometimes, too. Flat on your back, the baby's weight will compress some of the major blood vessels. It won't hurt once in a while, but if you're uncomfortable, it's worth a try."

Although Jill had always been the sort of person who kept to herself, especially in a time like this, she'd forced herself to head to the clinic that day. More often than not, Carson was there, and she wanted to make that extra effort to see him whenever she could.

"Hey," she said when she saw Jennifer there instead. Another person who had known John, another person who was probably missing him terrible and Jill couldn't help but want to stick around. "Getting some things in order?" she asked.

"Hey, Jill." Jennifer turned from the cabinet she was not-really-arranging and managed something that could pass for a smile--hard, given how gloomy her thoughts were, but she didn't want to take that out on Jill. "Not really... just trying not to be bored to death. How are you?"

Jill managed a faint smile of her own at that and lifted her shoulders in a deep shrug. "You know," she said simply, because she wasn't sure either of them wanted to get into how tough it was trying to deal with John's disappearance. "Keeping busy seems like a good plan. Do you need help with anything?"

Jennifer shrugged. "Nah, it's okay," she said. "Really, there's nothing to do. I was just kind of rearranging things that didn't really need it. You know, lining up the labels so they exactly match and making sure all the caps are turned the same way. That kind of thing." Not doing much in the way of practicing medicine, that was for sure.

"Whatever the problem is, dear, I don't think that's going t'help," Carson said, having come into the infirmary just in time to see Dr. Keller knock her head against the table.

In time since Sheppard had gone, he'd been trying to keep busier than usual. God forbid some island catastrophe take them all by surprise again, but sometimes he couldn't help but think it'd be just the thing they all needed to get their mind off of their friend's sudden disappearance.

"No, probably not," Jennifer agreed, pushing back a little from the desk. "It's just aggravation." Carson was a welcome distraction, though. "How are you?"

"Managing, but I'll be alright eventually," Carson said. It'd be a lie to tell her he was alright straight out; even knowing what had happened to Colonel Sheppard back when he'd left Atlantis wasn't even much of a comfort, because if he could end up dead, nobody was really safe, were they?

"How about yourself?"
