”Let’s make a videotape.”

He had a vision of her, in his mind. A vision from the moment he saw her, standing there framed by the doorway of her perfect little house, her smile tense and confused - You can’t be who I thought you were. He had a vision of her, immaculate and demure, with her Southern Belle accent and her charmingly gap-toothed smile ( Read more... )

He's just come in here to drop off some fowl before heading off for the evening, not intending to stay at all, but he turns and then he turns back again and there's a man there who wasn't there before. And while maybe he's been walked up on without hearing it, and there are people here that he he doesn't know to look at, there's something about the expression his face, the confusion under the smile, the pale shade of his skin--hardly anyone stays really pale here--and there's the camera on the table.

"Great." He sighs, leaning back against the sink. "Hey, there."

His eyes fall on the stranger, a man with a scowl and a haggard kind of look to him, and a jittery smile passes over his face.

"Uh, hi. Hello?" he steps forward, just one foot, hunched and his eyes squinted with confusion. "I'm... I'm sorry, I'm not- I'm not sure..."

"No, you're not," he says with a thin smile, and then he senses that he's being unkind, and while being unkind wouldn't have bothered him at all before... a lot's changed. And he's been on the other side of the conversation.

"You're on an island," he says simply. "No one knows where it is, no one knows why anyone appears here. And you can't leave." Which isn't quite true, but he'll save that for later.

That was certainly informative.

Graham's eyes widen and he leans forward, like he hasn't quite heard correctly. "Oh. So, you? You say I can't leave?"

He hasn't been kidnapped, but with that kind of explanation, that's kind of the obvious conclusion.

Eden leans back against the counter, coffee in hand, Nelson perched on her shoulder and she raises an eyebrow. She takes in the camera. She supposes that it appeared with him.

"Comes as a bit of a shock, doesn't it?" she says.

He looks at her, and he doesn't think what she might look like through a camera lens. Not yet. That'll come later. Now, he notices the hard edges, the startling beauty, and the casual way she takes in his sudden appearance. All this, cataloged in a matter of seconds.

"I..." he laughs, pushing a hand through his hair and bracing the other on his tag-along desk chair. "Well, it's a lot of things. I think shocking is... well, yeah, it's pretty high up on the list."

Eden tucks the cigarette she's been playing with behind her ear and studies him for a moment. Nelson's unimpressed and hisses so Eden reaches up with her free hand and scratches the top of his little square head.

"Does this mean I've got to be the fucking welcome wagon? And I was about to go and have a bloody cigarette too."

"I think it means that I'm intruding," Graham decides, looking away with a nervous grin and a breath of laughter. She doesn't owe him any explanation, and he doesn't expect anything from her but the same kind of confusion he's feeling himself.

Fishing his pack of cigarettes from his pocket, he says, "I think... I think I could use one myself. Is the door...?" He trails off, jerking a thumb over his shoulder toward an unfamiliar hallway.

Wanda wasn't a huge fan of having her meals interrupted, mostly since she generally only remembered to turn in for them when she was really hungry. So long as they were somewhat interesting interruptions, though, like men with cameras showing up out of nowhere, she tended to be a lot more forgiving.

"You look a little lost there, handsome," she called once she'd taken a few seconds to chew and swallow her food.

He's never seen anyone who looks quite like her, and he's suddenly struck by the memory of cheap greeting card paintings depicting angels. Renaissance frescoes and biblical woodcut prints.

He tips his head to the side, smiling tentatively, and says, "Yeah, no... I, uh- Yes, I think- I think I might be."

"Just like the rest of us," said Wanda, smiling knowingly and leaning back a little to get a better look at the guy. "You want to grab a seat? Something to eat? There's plenty to go around."

"Oh, no. No, I'm fine. I'll... a seat might be a good idea, though," he admits, pulling out the chair next to her and sliding into it, his eyes flickering curiously around the room.

"Do you live here?"
