Disappearances always shook Jim up. It was the same all over again, feeling the need to keep closer to Pam and Sam, even when he knew that wouldn't really help. Things had mostly calmed down, now, helped along by following his usual schedule for each day. Normalcy had to be kept up just for Sam's sake, and it made it something Jim could focus on ( Read more... )

"Don't you think it's a little hot for all those layers, Sammy?" Pam asked from the doorway, where she had been standing and watching just long enough to see Sam start to pull clothes out of the box. She walked in now, though, completely unable to hide the smile on her face. Heading over to where they stood, she leaned in, pressing a kiss to the corner of Jim's mouth, crouching in front of where Sam was still finding more articles of clothing to put on. "You get all these yourself?"

"I think this is her way of saying she doesn't like our taste in clothes," Jim sighed once he realized who had popped in. He'd finally just sat down, since the laundry was still going anyway. He just made sure she didn't make too much of a mess.

Sam beamed up at Pam, tangled in a layer she'd just put on. It looked like a shirt that'd fit Jim, which was why it practically was falling off her. "Uh-huh. I big girl, Mommy."

"That's right, you are," Pam agreed, leaning in to kiss what she could reach of Sam's mostly-covered forehead. It was hard not to laugh at the way Sam looked, practically lost in all of those enormous clothes, but it was undeniably adorable, too, and she couldn't completely keep a hint of pride out of her voice. "A big girl in big clothes, too. You like that shirt, Sam?"

Eagerly, Sam nodded, clearly all too pleased with her choice. Laughing, Pam turned back to Jim. "You know, that's actually a pretty nice one. You should keep it once she gets bored with it."

"Maybe we should start letting her be the one that tries her luck with this box. I think it likes her more than either of us," he mused. She'd put her straw hat on again, her giggling heard under it.

There were few things in life for which Veronica Mars held a permanent soft spot. That little girl was high on the list.

"What eez zis?" she asked, fluttering her lashes, hand pressed to her heart as she effected a dramatic French accent. "Mon dieu, what taste! What style! Zat 'at, eet eez parfait!"

Jim couldn't hold back a laugh when he saw his daughter brighten and then shuffle over to greet Veronica. He was surprised she didn't fall.

"I have hat," she said, proudly, as if Veronica could not see the gigantic thing on her head that kept falling down over her eyes.

"And about two layers of clothing so far," he added for her, shaking his head. There were still clothes out on the floor, too, from when she pulled out a couple of shirts at once.

"That is definitely a hat," Veronica agreed, the effort to hold back a laugh registering as a smirk instead. Tugging at the brim of the hat, she sank down to kneel beside Sam. "Well-spotted." She flashed a glance at Jim and back to Sam. "Gonna put on a fashion show? You've got an entire spring collection here, looks like."

"I didn't know tie-dye was in this season," he said, shaking his head in amusement. He had a feeling a lot of what she took out was only because she liked the bright colors. "Hey, Sammy. Maybe if you ask nicely, Veronica will show you the fashion show twirl. Do you want her to show you?"

Sam didn't even need to know what that was, but that hardly mattered, as she looked at Veronica and nodded, saying, "Uh-huh."

"She dresses very prettily," Karen commented as she walked in with a small bag of laundry of her own. It wasn't much, just little odds and ends Nick missed the last time he'd done it (and having a bum ankle had been awesome for things like that). "Heya, Sammy. You helping dad out with laundry today?"

"Or making me more. I'm not sure which yet," he said, watching her peek out from under the big hat on her head. The thing really looked comical on her.

"I big girl. I dress!" she exclaimed, beaming up at Karen. She'd been getting pretty good at stuff like that lately, and it was for that reason alone that he was fine with her playing like she was.

"I see that," she replied approvingly. Halfway into a crouch, Karen winced and stood back up, her ankle not entirely up to it just yet. She tilted Sam's hat back a bit so she could see her face, and leaned over to give her a kiss on the forehead. "Maybe we can play dress up later, huh?"

"Aunt Karen's still hurt a little, sweetie," he said, standing to head over to her to nudge her away before "Why don't you go find another shirt?"

She seemed to at least get the hint, shuffling back to the box to start going through it again. Standing up straight, he turned to Karen. "You need any help there?"

"You better go ahead and build her a walk-in closet," Keith observed, carrying his laundry past the pair, grinning down at Sam as he went. "Since she's starting already."

"Oh, we're already planning the hut extension," he assured, watching Sam dig into the clothes box for another shirt to put on. She'd at least taken off the hat for the moment. "It'll be bigger than her room."

"Separate floor for shoes," Keith agreed, resting his laundry on a washing machine and wandering back to stand by Jim. "Yup, going to be a fashionista for sure."

""Of course," he agreed with a nod, wincing a little when he saw Sam trip on one of her shirts and tumble back onto her butt. Any worry left him when she started laughing. She looked up at both Keith and he, holding the big hat she had in both her hands. She put it back on her head, her giggles muffled now.

"Is that what you want to wear today, Sammy?" he asked, biting back a grin. He was probably asking for it and she'd insist when he went to try to untangle her.

"Uh-huh," came the short reply, and she picked up her hat enough to see the next shirt she wanted to grab from the growing pile on the ground. "I dress!"
