polka dots

Ellen liked changing up her routine now and again, and with the return of hot weather after the freak blizzard, she'd scrubbed through the clothes box to find a bathing suit that wasn't half a rag and three pieces of string. She grabbed a blanket and hit the beach, dropping her sandals, blanket, book, and sunglasses in the sand. She stretched a ( Read more... )

Fred was flying low over the water when he caught sight of someone-- he recognized Ellen as he drew nearer-- walking up toward a pile of stuff and starting to spread out a towel. Laughing to himself, he brought the hoverboard down low as she sat down on the towel, stuck his fingers in his mouth and gave a piercing wolf whistle. The look she cut him as he landed a few metres away was a familiar one; she looked like she couldn't tell if she wanted to laugh or box his ears. "Morning!" he called out as innocently as he could while still wearing a self-satisfied grin.

Ellen's head jerked up, the look on her face something between a smirk and a glare. The shock of red and the hoverboard quickly revealed the whistle's originator to her and she shook her head, glancing up at him. "You're incorrigible, you know that?" She suspected he did, but still. It bore repeating.

"One of my better traits, I'm told," he said with a sage nod; she was right in guessing it wasn't the first time he'd heard the word applied to him. Slinging the hoverboard down onto the sand beside her, he sat on it, careful not to engage the pressure pads that would send it back into the air. "How's the water? And what are you reading?" It also would not be the first time someone had told him he was incredibly nosy, either.

"Told? By who?" She furrowed her brow, shaking her head with a grin. She generally wouldn't use the word "better" to describe that trait.

"The water is great and I'm reading Jane Austen." She cocked her head to the side, shaking it once with a grin. "What about you, kid? How's life, reading any great books yourself? Any notable girls?" If he nosed in, then so could she.

He'd finally coughed up the last of his phlegm, it seemed, and while O-Ren, Roger, Angua and Dog could make airs, none of them was as happy about that as Dean.

He was all but strolling down the boardwalk on his way to the clinic now, stethoscope swinging around his neck. He grinned when he saw Helen on the path in front of him, and called out to her. "Hey little girl, wanna play doctor?"

It was possible some of his good cheer had bled into morbid stupidity.

Ellen was on her way down to the beach, sunglasses on her face and an arm full of her towel and book. It was a gorgeous day, and she was in a damn good mood.

She recognized the voice and paused with a start. Oh, Dean. She turned, sliding her glasses down her nose, with a wry smile and arched eyebrow. "'Play doctor?'"

"Yeah, you know, doctor." His eyebrows waggled, but upon review, Dean decided he probably wouldn't survive the explanation.

"Or we could do what you're doing," he said, jogging to meet her.

Ellen slipped the sunglasses up to the top of her head and cocked her head to the side a little, lips barely pursed. "Dean, I've been 'playing doctor' for years." Her lips twitched into a wry smile. "I could probably explain more to you than you could to me."

She turned up the path, letting him fall into step beside her. "Just thought I'd hit the beach, do some laps. Running in this weather gets boring and hot as hell." She glanced up at him quizzically. "What's with the stethoscope, anyway? You can't have just found it to ask girls to play doctor." Well, he could have. She was just hoping he hadn't sunk that low.

Karolina's already run, showered, and breakfasted already today and now she's strolling leisurely through the ankle deep surf, holding her flip flops and a towel in one hand. She stops to look out at a woman doing laps, and watches her for awhile. She's surprised at how long it takes her to realize that it's Ellen, but once she does, she slips out of her shorts and top and lays herself out in the sun waiting for Ellen to come in.

Ellen comes up the beach, eying the figure sitting by her belongings warily. As she gets closer, she recognizes the slim figure and blonde hair, and smiles. She gets up next to the prone form and shakes her hair a little, getting a spray of drops on Karo. "Hey, beach bum." She pulls back, grabbing her towel to dry off a bit.

"Hey yourself," Karolina says, grinning up at Ellen. She makes a face as the water hits her but continues. "I saw you out there. You don't mind me moving in on your turf do you?" she asks.

She leaned sideways, squeezing water from her hair. "Well, I might have to put out a hit on you, but I'll let it slide this time." She grinned, winking quickly before sitting down next to Karo. "How you doing, kid?"

The people here are so fucking nice. Pam can't get over it. Today, some guy she's talked to a few times tells her he's going to the beach and he'd be happy to escort her. It's no trouble. She finds out he's going diving. Interesting. They chat amiably and when they hit the beach he makes sure she's settled before assuring her that he'll check in before he heads back if she wants to go then.

Pam plunks herself down in the sand in her short shorts and a white wifebeater. The sun is hot and before long her skin feels tight and shiny so she picks her way toward the jungle and only sits when she feels to cool comfort of shade that kills the direct heat of the sun. She wonders what it looks like- maybe Hawaii, or maybe like the Philippines. It must be pretty.

She can hear people, the telltale sound of a crunch and a squeak that give away footsteps in dry sand. Pam leans back on her elbows and waits for the guy. He says he'll be a while. She's okay with that.

I walked on the beach a lot, which meant I was often graced with a view of women in bathing suits. I didn't usually look-- three quarters of them were young enough to be my kids, and the other quarter, well. Pam had been the sum total of my love life for so long, I almost didn't know how to look elsewhere-- but it had been a while by anyone's standards. So I didn't think I could be faulted for looking twice at the woman in the polka dot suit stretched out on a towel. She looked good; and moreover, she looked like the type to tell me to keep my eyes to myself if she didn't like me looking.

She had dried off well enough, stretching out on the towel on her stomach, book open in front of her. She glanced up at the figure just down the beach; typically she'd just get back to her book, but this guy had something about him that made her look twice. She caught his eye, giving a small smile.

I grinned back, lifting my hand in a lame little wave. Smooth, Eddie. "You're pretty brave," I said, hoping to cover for having been caught looking with a little humor. "Isn't this the beach where Attack of the Giant Squids went down last month?"

Her smile widened, crooked and curious. He came over to her and she pushed up on her elbows, suddenly aware of her bathing suit. "Maybe," She said with a shrug. "But the squids have more to worry about than I do." She looked up at him with a small smile.
