"What I enjoy about cooking," Archie was saying, leaned forward and elbows resting on the counter of the kitchen, a wooden spoon bandied about in one hand, "is that it's an ever-changing challenge. Every dish is different and can require a different approach." His stature and state of dress -- sloppy by his standards, with shirt untucked, sleeves ( Read more... )

The month of June seemed to create even more humidity and heat, but being accustomed to waking up at such early hours, Sonya was able to train just before the heat became too unbearable.

It was after a quick shower and change of clothes that she headed to the kitchen to find something to eat..that she found in the state it was.

"Jesus..." Granted the kitchen was always busy, but this time it looked like a small war had gone on inside it. And judging by the man and woman by the stove, maybe it wasn't so far fetched.

"Do you..need help?" She asked the woman. Sonya was normally not one to really offer help to a stranger, but this called for help.

The offer, though terribly sweet and well-meant, only encouraged a light laugh from Briony. Typically the most fastidious and organized of persons, Briony found her current situation too ridiculous not to laugh at and enjoy.

"Oh thank you," she said warmly. "But it's our mess. We should take care of it ourselves. Do have something to eat! The cake is the best, I think."

Sonya's appetite had never been that big, and her appetite for sweets even less, but obviously the woman had gone through a lot of trouble to make it. She took a small piece of cake and a lot of fruit salad, before taking a small bite of the cake where she stood.

"It's good." She nodded, before looking around. "I've seen you in the kitchen before, you're usually not this messy." She stated, making her way to the coffee pot.

"No," Briony agreed, her voice still light with good humor as she took up a rag to begin her work. "Usually not at all. But Lieutenant Kennedy prides himself, in small part, in being a terrible influence I think."

Having been similarly 'distracted' the night before, Bush had found himself likewise hungry when he had woken not long after Archie had made his departure. He wasn't generally one to spend much time on breakfast - it was rare that he even bothered to go all the way up to the Compound for it - but there was time still left before the day began in earnest and he was in the mood for real, honest food.

He had not expected to find Archie in the kitchen, nor had he thought he would discover that a hurricane had gone through. Taking in the surfaces covered in flour, sugar dusting everything in sight, the jam splattered across the counter, it was all he could do not to laugh. "Good Christ, what in God's name did you do, Kennedy?"

Archie did not jump to attention at William's arrival, but he did stand up straight. The spoon remained secure in one hand. "We made breakfast, is what we did," he informed William, proud and light. "I wouldn't suggest laughing while you eat it, Mr. Bush. You just might choke."

"It looks like you had a war with breakfast," Bush deadpanned, looking about the room. "This whole cooking business of yours is getting more and more dangerous by the moment." He came over to the counter and peered at the rolls. "Is all of this edible?"

"Not a single person was harmed in the making of this meal," Archie replied, giving William a discreet look. "Isn't that right, Ms. Tallis?"

The girl smiled in her sweet, meek way. "It looks much worse than it really was," she assured him, which prompted a proud, told-you-so expression on Archie's face. "It's all very edible and very good. We threw out the burned batch," he explained quickly. "So go on, try."

A terrible hunger, scared up by riding hard, and Jenny came into the kitchen with her hair twisted back from her face, sticking to her skin in sticky curls. She walked into the kitchen, desperate, and made a beeline for the counter. She smiled brightly, a flush burning in her cheek.

"Tell me there's coffee and I will bless you," she said.

Briony smiled as she moved to fetch the woman a mug and fill it with hot, fresh coffee. "No blessings necessary," she said. "It's only coffee, but you're very sweet to say so."

Jenny held out both hands for the cup, receiving it with a grateful smile.

"Only coffee, and yet I bless you anyway," said Jenny, inhaling the scent of it. "At home, it was one of the few prerogatives that I had, where and when I placed my favour.'

"Where was home?" Briony asked, had to ask when it was phrased so delicately. "If I may know."

"Well," said Horatio. He'd followed his nose to the coffee and found rather more than that, but not unpleasantly so. "Ms. Tallis," he greeted, daring to walk closer to the food. "Archie. Whatever have you gotten into here?"

"Good morning, lieutenant," Briony replied, greeting the other sailor with a warm, sweet smile.

"Horatio!" Archie beamed with the same warmth but more energy. "We've gotten into breakfast, as you can see. Come on, help yourself."

"Did you?" Horatio surveyed their renderings, which he must admit did resemble breakfast foods in many respects. "What is this bit, here?" he asked, nudging the jam cake with the end of a spoon.

"It's cake, Horatio," Archie sighed, rolling his eyes. Honestly, it didn't look dangerous. To him. "It won't explode."

"It's a jam cake," Briony clarified with an amused tone. "Strawberry."

"Hey, nu-uh, I saw the Tempest, and there were no naked dancing cows in any of the scenes," Ray interjected, like he actually knew what the hell play they were talking about. He peeked around them at the food. "Guess maybe Geoffrey was holding out on us."

Briony, unused to Ray's particular flavor of humor, went quiet with wide eyes. But Archie simply laughed, touching Briony's hand to reassure her. "It's the clothed dancing cows that he cut, but what can you do with such a meager bovine cast?"

Ray groaned. "Oh god, Archie, seriously? I guess you win this round," he said.

"What the hell are you guys doing, making a picnic?"

Archie preened with pride, even if his victory was a senseless and silly one. There weren't many other sort of victories to be had on the island. "We've made breakfast," he answered, waving a hand at the spread of food. "And a good one at that, if one were to ask me."
