I don't even realize what day it is until nearly the whole day is done. Near the end of my life, I barely talked to my parents. I didn't talked to anyone, actually, but that isn't the point. It's strange, now. After so long away from then, all I find myself wishing right now is I could make up for so many of the things I missed. I clouded myself ( Read more... )

"Don't you look all contemplative," James commented when he spotted Zia. At least, that was what he thought the name was and James was aces with names and faces even when he hadn't seen them in a while, thank you. It was too bad he couldn't get some names and faces out of his head. He'd just come out of the water, his salty-wet hair clinging to his forehead and cheeks. With his hand, he pressed it back, but a fat lot of good that did; it didn't matter much.

Somewhere near Zia were his glasses, laying on his t-shirt. He spotted the shirt just inches away and crouched down to retrieve it and his specs.

I hadn't even noticed him nearby until he was nearly right beside me. It's not hard to sort of let your mind wander off around here, I guess. I'm actually grateful it's a familiar face. It's probably not good if I get too focused on my thoughts.

"Just watching the sunset," I reply, shrugging a shoulder awkwardly. I didn't think I looked that distracted. "How's the water?"

The water was the same as it always was - warm, inviting, a way to pass the time. "Spectacular," he answered, somewhere between sarcastic and not. "How's the sunset?"

"Not bad," I reply. It's generally got more colors, but it seems a little muted this time around. "I live on the beach with my girlfriend, so I've seen a couple of better ones, actually."

"If you're waiting for something to sail on up, I've done that," Belle said, a soft smile on her face as she cast a shadow over Zia. "Nothing ever does come up but the breeze. No madly wonderful ships, no matter how much you can hope for them."

I never even thought about ships ever coming here. It's so easy to fall into the pattern of thinking that this place is unreachable. Honestly, I'm starting to think I like it that way.

"Did you ever see the ship that goes between here and the other island?" I ask, turning my head up to briefly smile at Belle. I might be having a bad day, but maybe company right now will be a good thing.

"Me? No," Belle admitted, though there was a slight bit of envy and wonder in her tone. Maybe it would be a delight to watch that boat come in. She could pretend that the sails represented something else entirely and it was a rescue ship coming for them, finding them and bringing them home. "When does it sail, typically?"

"I don't know, actually," I admit. I've never really paid attention. Going to the other island doesn't seem like a great idea to me. "At least once a week, I know. It docks not far from here."

Mikal happened upon Zia purely by chance, out for a walk along the shore, feet bare and jeans rolled up around her shins. Eugene, she'd left back at the hut, figuring she wasn't going too far anyway, and it was nice to have a little quiet for a while. Coming across Zia purely by chance, she was glad she had; it allowed her, without distraction, to cross straight to where he sat, instinctively slinging one arm around his shoulders, leaning in to quickly kiss his cheek.

"Hey," she said warmly, a crooked smile on her face as she looked over at him. If anything was amiss, she hadn't yet noticed it. "I'm glad you're back, you were gone a while."

I have to admit, I'm glad Mikal's shown up. She surprises me at first, I have to admit, but that in itself isn't anything new. Turning my head to smile at her once she's against me, I feel a little more at ease.

"I was going to head over to the hut soon," I say. I don't actually know how long it's been since I left earlier in the day. "Taking a walk?"

"Yup," she confirmed, nodding before resting her chin on his shoulder, expression more fond than anything else. "Taking a walk, waiting for you. Eugene was pretty tired, but it's so nice out." The weather was one of many things she didn't intend to ever take for granted around here. After having been someplace infinitely worse, she knew better than that.

"Dog's getting lazy," I tease, shaking my head. Eugene's gotten pretty used to living with us now. It's a good thing, I think. She's even grown on me, too. Glancing over toward the water again, he let out a slow sigh. "The sunset's nice today."
