Those left behind

She'd discovered it the day he'd vanished. It wasn't immediate, as she hardly tracked his every move, every day, and his personal and professional duties kept him quite busy at times. By the end of the day, however, it was clear that he--and most of his possessions--were vanished completely. When it was first confirmed, the sudden, overwhelming ( Read more... )

Jon went over to New Atlantis as soon as he heard of Sheppard's disappearance, not for any particular purpose beyond seeking out a space where he knew he would not be alone in his melancholy, and possibly to offer support if it was needed.

He found the older woman alone at a picnic table near the hut that had been John's, and he motioned Ghost to stay back as he drew close, and sat down opposite her. "I take it you knew him well," he said quietly, offering her a slight smile as her head lifted.

She was not so lost in thought that she missed his approach, but even with it, she did not quite recognize him. Perhaps she had glimpsed him at a gathering before, with John, perhaps he was simply among the many friends John had made on the island which she had never had the opportunity to meet.

She would have asked to confirm about John--as his manner and sudden arrival implied that he was affected by John's disappearance as well--but he did so first, and thus summoned a small smile.

"We lived through a lot together, yes." Her smile was empathic. "Are you a friend of his?"

"Been here almost as long as he has-- was," Jon amended, his face showing clearly the strangeness he felt in referring to it thus. "I wouldn't say I knew him well, but I knew him. It's..." he trailed off, shrugging. "I'm not one for words, but it won't be the same without him." Each time a familiar face vanished from his daily routine, it was a sharp reminder of all they stood to lose, each of them, every day they spent here.

Ronon had not been any more impressed to find Sheppard gone than he had when Teyla disappeared. Yet he had often wanted to leave so why begrudge John that. The John he knew would have wanted to go back to Atlantis and he couldn't see why the John he'd only known for a few months would be different. But that didn't change the fact that New Atlantis was diminished by his absence. And worse was the lack of ability to do anything about it - something Ronon hated. He was not good at doing nothing.

So he had settled for keeping Jennifer close as if she would not vanish when he was looking at her. And if he could keep an eye on anyone else he did that too. So when he and Jennifer came back from a run and saw Dr Weir standing alone in the middle of the settlement, he nudged Jennifer as an indication they should go join her. "Hey," he said in greeting reaching for Jennifer's hand.

She squeezed Ronon's hand. "You okay?" she asked Elizabeth, concerned. She knew, of course, that there wasn't really an answer to that question when someone disappeared, but it was still a question you had to ask.
