The day that Kara had been both dreading and yearning for with a morbid kind of anticipation was here. Not only would members of the support group be invited to open up to the others as a whole, but tonight they would meet their sponsors, too. Kara and Sweets had paired everyone as fairly as they could, addict to addict, support to support, ( Read more... )

Truthfully, Eden's idea of how all this went was built on fiction, and being among the newest additions to an already existing group didn't help make her feel any more at ease. She'd always been more inclined to keep her troubles to herself. Sharing them now didn't really feel natural ( ... )

I didn't know what the deal was with this. I really didn't. I didn't even know why I'd showed up, other than Manhattan Nate (and how was it that I now had to put in labels) had mentioned it and I'd decided maybe it would be a good idea. I didn't even have a goddamn addiction with a definition. I was just fucked up ( ... )

It's damn weird doing this again here, but Terry's not stupid. She knows when she needs help, she knows exactly what the theme of the day means and she knows her pride is nothing in the face of her addiction. It figures her first meeting is the one where she picks up a sponsor, but she doesn't see how that's too bad. The woman in charge looks a bit like she's playing this by ear, and it makes Terry feel okay about it.

The last time she did this, she literally couldn't talk. Now it's a little harder, but she's going to.

"Uh, hullo. My name's Theresa Cassidy," she starts, "and I'm an alcoholic. I had me first drink when I was thirteen-- ye do stupid things when you're bored in boarding school. But that's just where it started." For some reason, she doesn't want to bring up Tom. It feels a bit like a betrayal, even though she knows a lot of her problems stem from him. "I was being raised by me uncle, and when I hit puberty, I...we have mutants, in our world. I'm a mutant, and when I got me power, I joined me uncle in his criminal ( ... )

Mamet finds himself staring at Eden like a deer caught in the headlights. He doesn't know why the idea of having a sponsor intimidates him so much. Maybe it's 'cause he doesn't know her too well, knows her mostly through Penny. He wonders, shooting Starbuck a worried glance, why she didn't put him with Duck or Geoffrey.

But maybe that's the point. To have an unbiased sounding board. Still, he can't help but feel nervous, rubbing his palms against his jeans before extending a hand.

"Hi," he says, quiet. "I'm Mamet. I mean, we've met, but..."

Crap, he sucks at this already.

"It's been a while," Eden offers, shaking his hand. This whole thing is awkward, nerve-wracking, but the fact that he seems as uncertain as she is herself makes it easier. If nothing else, it helps her focus on putting him at ease so she doesn't have to think about herself. "I have to admit, I really don't know how all this works."

"Um...probably...probably you're supposed to tell me that drinking's bad," Mamet says, sinking into the chair next to hers. He smiles a little, his nervousness beginning to ebb away.

"I haven't seen you before, so I guess...you want me to tell you about myself?"

Rollie doesn't really say much during the meeting. The whole thing just gets under his skin and he feels awkward. Uncomfortable. Like he doesn't belong, or belongs too much.

But he sticks around. He made promises - some of them aloud and some of them implied - and so he sticks around, even longer than he has to.

Kara ended up next to him at the refreshments table. It wasn't by accident, but she did her best to make it seem that way.

"So," she said, trying for something less lame than, 'You came' and failing. "What'd you think?"

"Still trying to figure that out," he says, scratching the back of his neck like that'll somehow make the itch under his skin go away. "Not really sure what I'm doing yet."
