Secretly, as she bustled about in her full skirt and sweater set, Veronica Mars worried that a party might have been a bad idea, a breeding ground for germs and disaster. The more she worked, though, the less she worried (though she was still a touch concerned that her skin had begun to take on the characteristic piggy pink tinge that was a sign of ( Read more... )

Though River herself had tea on board Serenity every single day, often accompanied by both Veronica and Mal, it had never been anything she was have called a "tea party". This, though, with the tiny sandwiches and fancy cookies and more cheerfulness than even Kaylee could account for on a normal day, was nothing at all like usual.

Determined to keep an eye on things (She knew Mal would be upset if anything happened to Serenity, even though he didn't seem fussed about letting just anyone on board at the moment.), River sipped carefully at a cup of tea and tried to eat a sandwich. At least it was small enough for her to manage the whole thing; she didn't want Veronica to think she didn't like it.

Smiling bright, Veronica headed on over toward River. "Hey, there you are," she said warmly. "You really ought to have a seat, honey." She just barely refrained from using the phrase 'in your delicate condition.' Instead, she swerved toward a primary subject on her mind. "You washed your hands, right? Can't be too careful."

It was probable that neither possibility ever would have crossed her mind without the island's meddling, but River had come to decide that Veronica calling her "honey" was just as unsettling as Mal's frequent and florid words of devotion. She wanted her people back the way they were supposed to be, but until then, she'd just have to take them as they were.

"I did," she said, putting her sandwich down and raising up her hands for inspection. "What are we being careful of?"

"Germs," Veronica informed her seriously. "I mean, I don't want you getting sick, and anyway, I read there's a terrible flu going around." River didn't seem in any danger of going pink, but that didn't mean anything. She'd heard it could strike very quickly.

No, he decided, his mind was not playing tricks on him. There really were more parties going on than usual. It was fine by him, though. It kept the boredom away, and in this case, it gave him an excuse to go check out that spaceship he'd been eying since he'd first caught sight of it. He had his doubts about seriously finding any interesting women at a tea party, but he could sacrifice a few hours in the name of getting a look inside the ship.

He might not have missed home any longer, but it still had been a year since he'd been around any significant technology, save for random accessories. It was good to have another change of pace.

Sam was definitely really worried about people, but when he'd seen the little thing notice, he couldn't help but show up. He didn't think this was the best time to have a conversation, but just because he was with Jess now didn't mean he wanted to forever-ignore Veronica. And okay, so he wanted to make sure she didn't fully humiliate herself. It was a good goal.

Sam was one person Veronica honestly hadn't expected to attend, and the sight of him turned her stomach, a faint sorrow fluttering up in her. They'd been so good together, she thought. Nostalgia was against her now, but she fought it, smiling determinedly as she fluttered over. "Sam! It's so good of you to come."

Sam laid eyes on the woman herself and plastered a polite and puppy-dog smile on his face, trying not to alarm any of the happy hippie people with his presence. "I saw you were hosting a party and I couldn't miss it, not for the world." And besides, it never hurt to have a little tiny bit of leverage on people he cared about. It was just good planning.

"Oh," Veronica said, a bit surprised, but no less pleased, "that's... that's sweet of you, Sam." She smiled, lower her gaze a moment. "I feel like we hardly ever talk anymore." Things had been just so awkward since Jess' arrival, but with him here in front of her, it was impossible not to think how much she had missed his company.

Asher decided he definitely needed to get out more. He didn't tend to venture too far from the Compound most days, not until recently, and now that he had, he was left wondering: Did the island always have it's own giant spaceship?

That really seemed like something he should have known.

Tea parties were a bit too girly for his liking, but the name he'd seen on that beautifully crafted flier - Serenity - well, it sounded too nice to stay away. And they had little sandwiches! It was definitely a lot more wholesome than visiting the strip club, which was another bonus.

The pink dinosaur-hippo had been the decision-maker for Danica. She just simply couldn't resist anything pink. Now it was like her favorite color of all time, so much so that she'd dressed to match it, just for the occasion. She felt guilty about substituting the flamboyant wig for a hot pink tutu but had made up for it with her purple leg-warmers and Barbie pumps.

She hadn't been worried about not knowing anyone there since she was making new friends so easily but when she saw her brother, she couldn't help running straight for him squealing his name excitedly. And since his back was turned, it made perfect sense for her to leap up onto it and cling to his neck, wrapping her legs around his middle. They hadn't played piggy-backs in so long!

"Oof!" Asher staggered a bit under the added surprise weight before he caught his balance again. "A warning next time might be nice, Dan," he said, words muffled by the last bit of sandwich he had left in his mouth, trying not to choke while laughing.

Talos laughter was probably all the other tea party-goers could hear.

"But that would have spoiled the surprise, baby!" What was the point of a surprise ambush if there was a warning beforehand? Asher could be so silly sometimes, it was a good job he had Danica around to point the important things out to him. Maybe it was because he was blond, she mused, since his head was right there. She hooked her ankles to stop herself from slipping down, readjusting her hold. "Am I too heavy for you?" She asked, suddenly worried she would hurt his back. He needed to be in fit, fighting condition for when Del gave birth so he could be there right by her side all the way. Danica couldn't bear it if something she did put that in jeopardy.

While it was true that he had already attended quite a few gatherings since he'd determined to truly become extroverted--rather than play at it as he'd been for centuries--but he had so much to make up for, and his conversation with the man--who he recognized to be one of the names on the flier--that he had to come and visit when invited.

That he thought he recognized the other name on the flier only gave further reason. It would be good to have a decent cup of real tea after so long, as well. He could only hope that the tea party, as it was labeled, would provide that.
