Happy Decanting Day Kon-El!

Apr 20, 2009 11:31

After all was said and done, the party was set for Monday after classes. Tim, with Coraline's help ( and her pie chart), attended decorating and food for a barbeque, and Dick secured the use of Rock Band the way he did most things: by charming someone else into doing it for him, in this case, Elphaba, with a promise to show her how to play (which ( Read more... )

Kon was pretty sure that if his grin got any bigger, he was going to break something. He wasn’t sure why, exactly, he hadn’t told anyone about his birthday - decanting day, as Dick insisted on calling it - but things always seemed different here. Apparently not as different as he seemed to think, though. Not with the signs upon signs and the crowd that he’d heard Dick and Coraline encouraging.

To most of the island, he was turning seventeen. To a select few, he was turning three.

He was pretty sure he preferred turning three.

He wandered the party, grinning and waving at both the people he knew and the people he didn’t. He’d thrown a party here before, but that was back when he didn’t know anyone and besides. It was different when it was thrown by your friends in your honor. Life? Was good.

(Find him absolutely anywhere at the party, inside or outside.)

Kon laughed. "I didn't go around telling anyone, but apparently the telling wasn't necessary. Tim and Dick and Coraline made this party the next sensation or something, I don't know. My birthday was actually a few days ago." He grinned. "I'm seventeen."

Or three, depending on your point of view. He thought about the way that his years translated, kind of like dog years.

"Definitely well. A lot of people I know and even more people I don't."

Talitha was lazing somewhere nearby and Trance? Trance was monopolizing the trampoline. She started with a few simple flips. Tucked flips, forward and backward. Piked flips, also forward and backward. The flips were almost lazy as she got used to the spring again. She used the flips to warm herself for some of the more complicated moves.

She moved from the flips to twists in the air, adding one each time she went back in the air. And then it was flips with twists. Something that looked more like a cartwheel, even if her hands never hit the trampoline.

Really, she was just having more of a problem coming up with new things to do than actually doing them. It was fun.

Nessa had seen the colourful invitations and had been, well, ordered almost, to come to the party.

The trampoline was usually a children's toy, but on this island more often it was used by what one would falsely call 'grown-ups'. Nessa thought it wonderful that they refused to act that way. It was such a dull thing to be.

The woman on the trampoline at the moment caught her eye. She was purple. Nessa had seen her before, as she had also seen a green woman, but had never had the opportunity to talk to her. She didn't have the opportunity to talk to her now either, since she was far too busy making dangerous spins, but Nessa couldn't help but gaze at the odd colour.

People stopping to stare at she was doing for a minute or two was something that Trance had gotten used to quickly. There were the ones who stuttered when they saw her skin color and there were the ones who stopped to actually look at what she was doing. And then there was the one who was looking at both and wasn't leaving.

After another minute or two, Trance slowed to a stop and crawled off, heading for her cup of water.

"Hi," she said to the woman.

It was only then that Nessa realised she had, in fact, been staring. "I've been staring, haven't I? I'm awfully sorry," she apologised.

Bart had brought out the skateboard he'd gotten as a gift from the island this year, and rather than monopolize someplace where he was less than able like the trampoline, he was using the benches and railing to show a few moves. It wasn't a hoverboard, but it was still fun.

He remembered telling Starfire once that when he was skateboarding, when he was in the air time could stretch out forever. It helped, keeping things in perspective. Except when he had to stop when someone was where he had planned to be. Like now.

"Sorry," he said, quickly, as he did a quick turn to catch his balance and the board before someone got knocked down or worse.

Kon nearly choked with laughter. "Oh, smooth moves, Bart. Nearly killing the birthday boy." Really, he wasn't hurt and he could have thought of worse things than getting run over by his best friend, but it was second nature teasing Bart. "Who are you going to run into next? Tim? Dick? Coraline? I mean, kill the birthday boy and then kill the birthday planners. Sounds like exactly the right thing to come next, don't you think?"

"I feel obligated to point out you stepped in my way, superklutz," Bart retorted, pretending to swing the skateboard around at his best friend's head. "Besides, it doesn't really feel like a party without one near-death experience. It's like football without the booby traps."

Some things would never change, and banter was one of those. He'd missed it.

"I feel obligated to point out that you didn't look where you were going." Kon didn't bother to duck. He knew that Bart wouldn't actually hit him. Not hard, at least. "And there will be no near-death experiences at my birthday party. Didn't you hear? Cora didn't factor those in."

The party had spread to the beach by the time Anatoly made his way there, which made it easier for him to find the man of the hour, so to speak. The crowd made him nervous, but it was a birthday party, and for that (and Cassie), he would deal wit h his anxiety.

"Anatoly!" Of course he was at the beach. After a brief time spent with Rock Band, that was where he was the most comfortable. Kon lifted a hand at Anatoly and waved him over. "Hey! I see you made the party. Tell me, did Cora or Cassie corral you into coming?" He waved a hand. "Never mind. I'm glad you're here."

"Cassie, though she didn't so much corral me as simply tell me when and where to be. I wasn't foolish enough to say no, even if I wanted to." Anatoly laughed, amused at the memory. "Is there going to be dancing tonight? Perhaps we should save sometime and get in a line for her."

Kon laughed. "Oh, I don't know what's in the cards. It sounds like Tim had one of his infamous plans and Dick added his own unique touch to it. I keep hearing about wet t-shirt contests, although I have yet to see anything like it around. Just my luck, I'll get Dick in a wet t-shirt."

Not his idea of fun. Even if it was.

When it was all said and done, Tim was pleased with how it had all turned out. Coraline, Dick and Cassie between the three of them managed to invite pretty near the whole damn island and Tim had scrambled to be sure there was enough food, fun and...something else that started with F for everyone. It was the kind of activity that made him feel useful so he didn't mind at all. After an hour or so, though, it became obvious that the party was running on its own schedule, not his and he found himself a quiet spot to watch it all happen.

He'd thought to bring his camera so that Kon would have memories of this for years to come and leaned against a convenient wall snapping photos. It was a simple routine, one that was long established. Search, select subject, lift camera, focus.

Click.

Kon laughed when he heard the familiar noise. "You're hiding." He ducked into view and moved closer to Tim. By now, he was fairly sure he had dozens of photos of himself and all of the people at the party. At least he'd have a record of who'd come.

"Also, you're stalking me. I thought I'd managed to kill you of that habit."

He thought no such thing, but, like Bart, it was routine to tease Tim.

Tim made a face and took another picture, framing Kon's face with the background hazy behind him. "I'm not stalking you. You came to me," Tim replied calmly and lowered his camera again.

"Happy decanting, by the way."

"You're stalking me. I keep seeing a Tim-shaped blur in the background whenever I turn around and a familiar click whenever you take a photo of me." Regardless of whether it was true or not, he could bluff. He returned Tim's scowl. "Why you insist on calling it a 'decanting'. It's a birthday, Tim."
