The same flap of wood had been driving Freddy batshit for the better part of two weeks now. It was nothing more than a loose... thing, on the hut. He wasn't exactly sure what the technical term was in the overall structure, just that while usually stationary and harmless but whenever the wind picked up it would get caught and thwapthwapthwap until ( Read more... )

"You know, I think they've got people for that," Lew muttered around the cigarette pinched between his lips, spinning the golf club he had in hand. He'd whacked a ball in this direction from a few meters away and had been trailing after it before being sidetracked by the swearing.

They had those people around for reasons just like this one, too. A hammer in the wrong hands was bound to lead to swearing one way or another -- miscalculated swing, crazy ex looking to bring on the hurt -- it was just a law of the universe.

"Yeah? Well as fucked as this is, I'd rather not drag my ass down to the building crew to bitch over something a nail and one swing should fix." Freddy grit out darkly with one hand wrapped tightly around his throbbing thumb. He spared a look over his shoulder at the man and wondered which one this guy was, but settled for squashing down the juvenile urge to kick the hammer. Or worse, his hut.

Stiffly, he mustered up some pride and picked the damn thing up.

"In theory, sure." Should was very clearly the key word in that sentence. And his theory had obviously been shot to hell already. "Another slip like that and you'll just be dragging your ass down to the clinic instead."

"In that case, I'll find a way to be a man about it. And the walk would be long enough to think of something better to say than 'I hit myself with a hammer'." He grimaced and examined his thumb nail before sparing the hammer a dark look. "This is the kinda thing our dads were supposed to train us for, right?"

"Freddy, what are you doing?" Jill asked, approaching from nearby with Dante at her side. The lynx swished his tail, sniffing the air curiously before he sat back on his haunches and stared at the man accusingly. She had no idea what it was with Dante and men lately, but the only one he seemed to like was Rodney.

"Are you okay?" she continued, patting Dante's head and telling him to stay where he was.

"Oh, I'm peachy." He griped, though it was rapidly losing heat and turning into more of a belated self-amusement. Really, he should have seen this coming, but he just had wanted it to stop. He chanced a look at the space of wall he'd been at war with and was annoyed when it remained serenely thwapless.

"I don't suppose you managed to not witness that, did you?" He chanced a look at Jill and offered a half smile. It may have resembled a cringe.

"I think I could be persuaded to forget I just witnessed something you don't want me to witness," Jill answered with a smile in return, crossing over to where Freddy was working and looking at his hut. "Do you need some help?"

"Will it be at the cost of my masculinity? Because in all honesty, I'm running low." He raised the thumb which was turning a rather impressive purple into her view before stooping down to retrieve the hammer. "One nail, Jill. One nail is all I need and instead I hit my thumb. My dad would wash his hands of me."

It was less about patience and more about the fact that she held out the hope that the thing would just blow off and they could put a new one on there which wouldn't have the same issues. Of course deep down she realized that probably wouldn't happen so when she returned from her morning run and coffee picked up the fallen hammer.

"Here. What do you want me to do?" She figured the sooner that they got it secured the better.

"Take the hammer and put me out of my misery. Just go straight for the temple and I'll try not to scream." Whining wasn't something he often resorted to but it seemed the best course to go. Freddy even hoped that if he earned enough sympathy points he'd get Anita volunteering to complete the job for him. He was marginally wounded after all.

"Have a good run?" He managed, taking the pressure off his thumb and examining it. Swollen and hurting like a bitch, but he doubted it was broken.

"It can't be that bad. With both of us working on it the whole process will go quickly." She came closer glancing at it. "What do you need me to do?" She'd do it by herself if she had to, but it might help to have another person there in case something got dropped again.

"Yeah." She always felt better after doing it. She supposed it was the fact that she accomplished something and she was in control of it.

While Lionel was certainly not immune to the sound of anger, he found himself stunned into a contemplative silence by that curt little curse as he passed by the man with the fallen hammer. It occurred to him, at that moment, just how far removed this place was from the real world that raised voices should sound out of place.

"You're not hurt, are you?" he asked from the stranger's shoulder as he approached.
