Even working dogs get to play

After his morning class, Will and Bran had spent some time tidying up Hafod-ar-Lan, but while Cafall was content to stay curled up near the door, watching the humans, Cof seemed determined to make her cabin fever impossible to ignore by following one or the other of them constantly. The third time Will turned from a task to find himself struggling ( Read more... )

"Now that looks far too much fun," Paul said cheerfully, hands stuffed in his pockets as he strolled down the beach. "Where are the rest of you?"

"Back at home, behaving and getting tea on," Will said with a wry grin as Cof came bounding back, tail wagging as she returned the precious stick. He took it from the dog's mouth and tossed it again, turning to Paul as Cof took off running once again. "We were trying to tidy up and she was driving me mad."

"Ah," Paul said, adjusting his glasses on his nose, "that's what happens with young dogs, isn't it? Raq and Ci wouldn't do more than lie in front of the fire and look crossly at you for trying to make them move before they were ready."

"Yeah," Will agreed with a fond smile as he thought of their dogs. "Cafall was well-behaved today, but this one needed to burn off some energy, so." He shaded his eyes as he looked after Cof. "She'll grow out of it. I keep telling myself that."

Moril knows the dog is there because Rua's tail stands up and all her hair sticks up on end, and with a yowl she races back toward the cart.

"That's odd," he muses. "Usually she doesn't seem to know they're bigger than her. Hullo, Will."

"Hullo, Moril," Will greets with a smile, pushing his fringe back behind his ear. He really does need a haircut, soon. "Sorry, didn't mean to upset her."

Cof hesitates at the yowl, her gait slowing briefly as she casts a curious look in Rua's direction, but the stick wins out and she trots the rest of the way to it, gripping it in her teeth before heading back toward the boys.

Moril shrugs. "She'll find something else to amuse her soon enough. Can I play?"

"Of course!" Will gestures toward Cof as she trots up triumphantly brandishing the stick. "Be my guest."

At one point, the stick got ahead of the dog and landed in the sand alone. Out of the nearby bushes, a full grown male lion jumped out of the bushes to pounce on it. It turned to look back at the bushes, as if for approval from someone, when the dog came up, startling him.

Kalm roared in fright, skidding back away from the other creature as Fiyero came out of the brush, bending down to wrap his arms around the mane of the lion. "Shh...Kalm, it's alright. it's just a dog." The man was fighting a chuckle as he fought to stay upright as the lion leaned into him, seeking protection. The lion was five times the dog's size and yet he still acted like a scared kitten, no matter how hard he and Elphaba tried.

The lion may have been more frightened than the dog, but an adult lion was enough to bring Will closer at a jog, though he stayed several feet back, watching the lion warily. "Cof! Tyrd yma!" he called, bringing the dog obediently to his side, stick forgotten. He tilted his head, watching man and lion with open curiosity. "A tame lion?"

"More like a very cowardly lion." Fiyero said with a soft chuckle as he stroked behind Kalm's ears and then along his whiskers in smooth motions in an effort to calm to the nervous lion who was trying to bury his massive head in the prince's chest. "I apologize if he startled you."

"Oh, it's all right. Just wasn't what I was expecting to see," Will assured him with a smile, then addressed the lion to add, "I promise Cof won't hurt you. She's a very good dog, if a bit overly energetic at times." He chuckled, crouching to scratch Cof's neck.
