the mark of the witch

Az was not in the habit of sleeping in late, but for some reason she had that morning. It was odd since she wasn't feeling ill or even the slightest bit tired and she had gone to sleep at a decent hour the night before. But there she was, waking up much later than usual and sneaking out of the Cain homestead before anyone could try to stop and ( Read more... )

The beach is a great place to be when the sun is shining and you haven't anything particular to do with your time. Edmund knew this very well, which was why he came upon Azkadellia as he walked off the path and onto the beach. He had some long swimming trunks (with what seemed like an absurd number of useful pockets) on but no shirt, a blanket and book in hand, and Honour padding smoothly along beside him. Catching sight of the princess's profile, Edmund headed over to say hello.

"Good afternoon," he greeted, giving her a smile. It faltered somewhat when he saw a dark mark on her back, something he thought might have been a smudge. But then, he'd never seen her back exposed like that, and it could have been there always for all he knew. He kept his grin bright. "How're you?"

"Hello, Edmund," Az said, smiling and waving at him. It was very nice to see him again and to see that he had gotten the same idea of enjoying the beach that she had. It was also very nice just to see him in general and for a moment she found herself looking at Edmund for a moment longer than was necessarily polite. Az was fairly certain that she could be excused since he was attractive and shirtless, and she was old enough now to appreciate things like that without acting like a silly girl.

But she wasn't quite old enough to make it seem as though she hadn't been looking. "What are you reading?"

That was a funny look, but Edmund didn't rightly know what it was all about. He let it pass because as far as he knew there was nothing wrong with his chest and no reason to worry. "Just some mystery novel the bookshelf gave me," he answered. "Mind if I sit with you?"

"Oh, not at all." Her smile grew and she scooted over in the sand, giving him more than enough room to lay out his towel and sit. "Do you like it so far? The book, I mean."

When Cain saw her removed the blouse, he had a gods-damned heart attack right on the spot and his blood went icy. No. No, no, it can't be. Panic flashed over his face and he felt suddenly stuck in spot, grounded as if back in the Suit. She could put him back in there. The Witch hadn't used magic that much to gain her reign, simply purely evil machinations.

Gods-damn it. Why was he so scared? "Azkadellia?" he got out from the distance he was at, twenty feet away, voice strung up and tense.

"Mr. Cain?" Az could hear the change in his voice and she turned around carefully. He acted strangely around her sometimes, but now he sounded as if he was actually frightened. Like he had been when she had first arrived.

"Is everything all right?"

His heart, which had previously been an epiphany to realize he still had, now felt icy and like he couldn't breathe. This felt like the panic of fear and dying all over. He approached very slowly, careful not to make sudden movements. "Az, you out here just enjoying the beach?" he asked, forcing calm to try and investigate the situation.

Wendy was seated on a towel, taking a break with a book and a tee shirt from all of the water. She was doing less reading and more looking around, as she turned pages, watching people as they did things. She was just about to call out to Az, when she spotted the other girl's bare back and frowned.

Leaning forward, she set her book down and tried to get a better look.

"Az!" she called, hands in the sand. "Az, you have something on your back."

Az's first thought was that it must be some sort of terrible bug and she went very still. There was no feeling of little feet or feelers, but that didn't mean anything at all. It could have been very small. Or perhaps it had gotten on why she was asleep and was now attached to her and... "What is it? Does it look like it will bite?"

Creeping up a bit more, Wendy was fully standing a moment later. A large part of her caution was due to the fact that she believed that it must be some sort of bug as well, for what else could it be.

"No, I don't think so," she said, moving slowly closer, until she was standing just behind the girl. "Oh, it's not a bug at all. How strange."

"What is it then?" The temptation to turn around and see what was on her back was now very strong, but Az was doing her best to resist it and stay still. It might not have been a bug, but it could still be something nasty.

"Is it dangerous looking?" She frowned and turned her head slightly. "I don't feel anything."
