Things had been going so well.

Okay, maybe "well" was a bit of an exaggeration, but things were a decent approximation of well. Nothing was blowing up and no one was in mortal peril, which was the best Pepper could hope for on any given day. It was all about perspective, really.

Juliet actually saw the shoes before she saw the woman. Red, strappy, high-heeled, and now - heartbreakingly - unwearable. She let out a little pained noise; no shoe that gorgeous deserved that kind of a death.

"I am so sorry," she said to the redhead, in much the same tones heard at a funeral. "Did you get to wear them long?"

Pepper glanced up, then offered a sheepish smile; if you're going to be caught being hopelessly shallow, it's always nice to be caught by someone who can understand. "Not really," she confessed, turning the broken shoe over in her hands. The heel was completely gone, God only knew where. "I found them in the box about a month ago. This was my second time wearing them."
