Muffin was staring at him, and John stared right back. Their rivalry went back years - John still had a scar from when she'd first jumped on his goddamn head, if you looked close enough - and though John could ignore her most of the time and Muffin was happy to return the favor, every once in a while she got a little ornery. More than usual, anyway ( Read more... )

Rodney passed the cat on his way into the rec room, trying to give it a wide berth. It didn't work. The thing came and wound itself around his legs, purring, and nearly tripped him over before he managed to extricate himself and stumbled the rest of the way into the room, muttering.

"Damn cat. Usually like cats. Not when they try to kill me- Ah," he said, when he looked up and saw Sheppard. "Just the man I was looking for. Where have you been lately?" He fixed him with a piercing stare. "...And why do you look so...so..." he searched for a word, before finally coming up with one, and saying it an aghast voice: "Happy?"

Muffin trying to kill Rodney was just a slight bit surprising. John had kind of expected ornery cat and ornery scientist to get along, if only to combine their powers and make his life just that bit more difficult.

Bu Rodney was still pretty good at that on his own. John raised his eyebrows, surprised he'd actually noticed anything. "I'm not allowed to be?"

Rodney scoffed. "Of course you are, but-" It wasn't happiness, Rodney realized. It was a kind of smugness that he, himself, had experienced pretty much daily ever since he'd started going out with Jill.

"Oh," he said. "No. You didn't!" He pointed at him. "You couldn't! ...Could you? Did you?" And with who?

If John had come away with any one talent being an officer in the Air Force, it was how to keep a straight face in front of a superior officer. It was a talent that came in handy often.

"I have no clue what you're talking about," he said, and took a sip of his coffee.

"And I left the dogs at home," Robin said with a shake of her head, watching both the man and the cat. "Four of them versus the one of that thing? I think they could take it," she said confidently with a brisk nod of her head, heading for the shelves to start looking for some quality John Woo to prove to Barney that yes, it was, in fact, the best of film genres ever.

"I don't know," John said, looking over his magazine again as he gave Muffin's behind a speculative look. "Muffin's pretty fiesty. They'd have to be big dogs, but even then, I'd place my bets on her."

"Four dogs, though. Plus?" Robin assured with a point of her finger to the cat. "I'm totally teaching them how to be brutal attack dogs. You know, when they aren't licking me all over and trying to beg for treats." She flashed the man a broad grin. "It yours?"

"God no," John shook his head, looking a lot less agitated than he actually was at the thought. He didn't think he could live with being the owner of the spawn of Satan. "No, she belonged to someone before he disappeared. I think someone takes care of her now, but she's mostly got run of the compound."

"That cat really hates you," Jill commented as she stepped over the small feline, turning around to watch it stalk down the Compound hall, presumably to glare at someone else. She'd seen it around before and it had never bothered her, but it seemed to really dislike John.

"Did you do something to it or is it just cranky?" she asked, flashing him as grin as she came into the room. Dante had tried to follow her, but she'd left the exceptionally large cat outside, sleeping in the shade.

"Muffin and I go way back," John answered. The look on his face suggested that wasn't exactly a good thing. "When she was just a kitten, she introduced her claws to my face. From then on, it's been war."

"That doesn't tell me whether or not you did something," Jill pointed out, taking the seat beside John and tipped her head over to grin at him. It hadn't been easy, but she'd managed to keep up a relatively cheerful demeanor since finding out Lucifer was gone just by not mentioning it. John would probably be happy to hear he had disappeared, but she couldn't bring herself to say it.

"I exist," he said simply, casting a glare toward the doorway Muffin had disappeared through. "I don't know, one day she decided to jump onto my head, and from then on, it was war."

There was an odd looking cat she passed while entering the rec room. She had seen it a few times before--enough times to know it had been there before the latest round of island gifts, but not enough to know its name, or whose it was.

She offered John a small, friendly smile upon catching sight of him. "Good afternoon, John."

There were some people John always had a genuine smile for, and no matter what kind of mood he was in, Elizabeth was one of them. Or he'd do his best, anyway.

"Hey," he greeted, and sat up a little straighter.

It was always good to see an Atlantean around the island, even if they did see each other most every day. It was especially fortunate to see one on a good day--there were certainly times on the island and Atlantis where that was a rare thing.

A touch of amusement crept into her smile, as she glanced down at the magazine in his hands. "The shelf offers Sports Illustrated?"

"On a good day," John nodded. He raised his eyebrows and held it up so she could see the cover. "I consider myself lucky if I get anything past 1980."

Lee nearly tripped over Muffin on his way into the rec room to hunt down John, catching himself on the door frame before he lost it and went sprawling to the floor.

"Who do these frakking things actually belong to, anyway?" He complained.

John snorted, unable to feel anything nearing sympathy whenever Muffin turned on someone else. He'd been victimized (or so he would claim) by her too often for too long to feel otherwise. "She and the other cats used to belong to someone called Newbie, but he's gone now."

"Of all the things for someone to leave behind," Lee said, entering the rec room. All of Martha's stuff had disappeared when she left, but this Newbie guy's weird looking cat had stayed behind.

"...I'm not even sure that one's a cat."

"She's have some other kind of Harry Potter animal," John said, looking up at the ceiling in thought. "Her dad's where she got that squished looking face from."

...why in the hell did he know so much about Muffin's lineage? Jesus, he'd hung around Newbie way too much.
