Movin' Day...and adoption day, apparently

Feb 16, 2009 15:11

After gettin' that not-so-subtle hint in his mailbox at the beginnin' of the month Bobby'd been thinkin' about it, and it didn't take him too long to cave and decide to move. His own team had been put on it, and 'fore too long the place was ready to move into, makin' Ellen his neighbor with John and the boys just on the other side of the waterfall ( Read more... )

"Tell me that you're going to give me that darling little thing to hold?"

Charlie wandered up to the porch, already holding out her hands. Her Momma's gold and peridot ring was glittering away merrily on her finger.

"You just move in, old man?"

"She's a bit skittish yet," Bobby warned, handin' the kitten carefully over to Charlie. "Name's Jezebel."

He nodded, takin' a quick glance back at the place. "Yeah, just today. All I got left is some books and them paper cranes you made me."

"Jezabel, huh? That's a pretty name, ain't it?" says Charlie, cradling the little bundle of fluff and bones against her chest, bending her head to press a kiss to the top of a little skull.

"You gonna move those? I can make you a whole new batch if you'd like. New batch for the new place?"

Bobby's gaze fell to the tiny kitten in Charlie's arms, his expression softening almost unconsciously. "I reckon so, I didn't name her. I think her owner's up and disappeared and she's decided I'm adoptin' her," he said. "Not that I'd say no, but if it's too much trouble, you don't have to."

"Man," said Dean. "I earned at least one night in that king size today. And no." He shifted his weight onto his uninjured leg - not having to redo the stitches would be a plus. "That's not a proposition."

The tiny mew he received in answer made Dean look up. "Uh, Bobby," he said, spying the kitten in Bobby's hands. "I thought you were more of a dog person."

Bobby rolled his eyes, about to tell Dean he oughta quit his whinin', when the younger man spotted the kitten. "Yeah, well, I got a feelin' I'm adoptin' this one," he replied, lookin' down at the ball of fluff. "You seen Ruby around last coupla days?"

Dean's stomach gave an odd little flop as he pondered the implications of the question. He and Ruby were never going to be BFFs, but it was unnerving when people disappeared. Especially when they were people from home.

"Uh, no," he said, squinting up at Bobby through the sunshine. "But I've gone days without seeing her before."

"So've I, but it seems to me that in connection with findin' this little thing sittin' in my bed just now means it might be a good time to check and see if she's still around," Bobby said, a bit wryly. "This cat's supposed to be hers, and it don't usually hang around my place."

Any worries about losing the baby weight were pretty much tossed out the window once Kate started trucking around the island with a baby strapped to her chest. She's probably wearing herself out, but Sam likes to be outside (or, at least Kate thinks that's what he's expressing) and it's too tempting to keep watching the weight fall off. As Sam stares up at the trees, cooing and waving his dimpled little arms, Kate can't help but spot a man holding what has to be the cutest kitten to ever exist. Ever.

"Hi," Kate calls, with a small wave.

Bobby looked up at the greeting, liftin' one hand in a return wave, the kitten small enough that he only needed one hand to hold her. "Hey. How old's the little one?" he said, noticin' the baby.

"Mine's 6 weeks old, how about yours?" she laughs, figuring she's probably not intruding too much.

"Don't quite know, she wasn't mine up until just today," Bobby said with a wry smile. "I'd guess about a coupla months or so. I'm Bobby Singer. This here's Jezebel."

"Oh, hey, who's this?" said Jess, her attention immediately grabbed by the tiny kitten in Bobby's arms. She was already reaching out to pet it before she laughed and stopped herself. "Sorry," she said, "I was actually coming over to see if you needed some help."

"Well, if you were comin' to help you got perfect timin', 'cause we're almost done," Bobby replied, with a crooked smile and a chuckle. "This here's Jezebel. She's Ruby's cat, or was. Think she's mine now. Wanna hold her?"

"Sure I do," said Jess, opening her arms so the kitten could climb over. "She just wander over and adopt you, then?" Jezebel. Seemed like just the thing someone like Ruby would name her cat.

Which didn't mean that Jess didn't sort of like it anyway.

"Reckon so," Bobby said, carefully transferring the kitten from his own arm to Jess'. "Which means Ruby's gone, or that's what my best guess would be."

John waved thanks again and headed up the path, two bottles of some British ale tucked under his arm and two mint chocolate and nut Cornetto ice cream cones in the other. Figured he and Bobby could use a bit of a break -- and Shaun hadn't minded passing out the provisions at all. Probably because John hadn't so much as blinked when he'd mentioned the them, which hadn't taken John too damned long to figure out meant 'zombies'. Creepy reaminimated sonsofbitches. John hated those things.

While Bobby on the porch wasn't an unusual sight, the fact t hat he was holdin' a little black fur ball was.

"Got company," John said, gesturing to the kitten with one of the Cornettos.

"She's Ruby's," Bobby said, lookin' up as John spoke. "Found her curled up in the middle of my bed just now, when I brought over the next load." The implication in that statement, why Ruby's goddamn cat would be seemingly makin' herself comfortable in Bobby's hut, was clear.
