McKay set his jaw stubbornly, staring up at the Gate. This wasn't right. None of this was right. This was, in all ways, in all possible definitions, very, very wrong.

For starters, what functioning Stargate came without a DHD drive and its crystals. Sure, some freakish peon-minded villager or idiot peasant might have destroyed it, but why? Why ( Read more... )

John himself was running on little more than a few hours sleep caught in an uncomfortable spot not far from the Stargate where McKay was working. It was only after a few too many snaps from McKay and the need for real food - not power bars - that he'd even left the area. Even though every rational thought told him that a Stargate without a DHD just would not work, the irrational part of him still had him practically running to the compound and back.

McKay could fix anything. Right?

"Anything new?" He knew the answer before he even asked, and held out the food he'd brought back to McKay as an advanced peace offering.

McKay glared at Sheppard, but grabbed the food before he could answer, chewing it fervently. "Yeah," he said, with his mouth full. "I had to pull the chevrons and not only are they analog, like the Stargate on Earth," he mumbled, swallowing. "But you are honestly insane for expecting it to be fixed already!"

John took a breath and bit back a number of retorts. "I didn't ask if you fixed it," he said at length, "I asked if there was anything new."

He looked back at the Stargate, and a feeling that was almost close to homesickness washed over him. "I don't get it," he said quietly, almost to himself. Why would a Stargate appear now, and without a DHD? It was almost like a sick joke.

McKay sat up with the control console in his lap, gritting his teeth. "Are you seriously going to just stand there and watch me work over my shoulder, because Snow White this is not, and I am not some dwarf that you can just...order to whistle and..." He did a few calculations, glancing to the Stargate.

He staggered to his feet, feeling around at the base of the ring, digging there and frowning. "No, this is...there are more symbols than a normal gate. This is wrong!"

Carter had no idea what was going on. She'd heard whispers, rumours of a ring-like device found off in the jungle - a Stargate? The possibility had excited her so much she'd almost shot herself in the foot.

She was sweaty-faced and panting when she stumbled up upon it at last; spotting McKay nearby, she walked over to him and said, "What's going on? Tell me everything. Start from the beginning." Her eyes were on the Gate...or whatever it was.

McKay turned to find Carter approaching and gestured to the Gate. "You would think this was great news," he laughed darkly. "Take a closer look. Notice anything missing?" His words were sharp.

It only took a glance. "A DHD." That did not bode well. "It doesn't work? I heard some people went through it."

"Well, they did. But if defies all the laws of time and space." God, he hated it when people did that. "We are so screwed."
