Now this was awkward--so many people, so very little time. At least I knew I looked lonely, if anything, and I was still upright and coherent, so that was something. Besides, I'd had some water.

There were a few people I'd wanted to kiss, that was true, but...I could deal with someone else. Maybe.

"Seriously, don't worry about it," I assured her, and put my hand lightly on her arm. "It's not like it was an unpleasant surprise, I swear. Besides, I started it."

"True," says Mayko, glancing at her hand but certainly not moving away from it. "And I'm not worried, I'm just... a little surprised at myself."

It had been for reassurance, seriously. "For kissing at midnight, or kissing a woman?" I asked, curious. Either way was okay, I was just curious.

Though that Katy Perry song made me want to puke.

"First time since I was an undergrad," says Mayko, taking another sip of her wine, nearly the last. "I'm just about due for a refill, do you want some?"

I laughed and pushed my hair back from my eyes. Seemed like nearly everyone had done the whole lesbian experience thing. Some of us just hadn't stopped. "Sure, that'd be great. Vodka and cranberry, please?"

"We should enjoy it while we can," says Mayko, ducking off to grab it, and more red wine for herself. "It only lasts for the night, after all," she adds as she hands it over. "Everything always goes back to normal tomorrow."

"That's what I heard," I admitted. "I'm new, but I guess...I can understand taking something, having a good time while you can, if it's only there for a short time."

I saluted her with the drink. "Thanks."

"My pleasure," says Mayko, raising her own glass. "Everything's always uncertain here. But then, I guess everything's always uncertain everywhere, it's just less obvious."

"Considering the fragility of life, I'd have to agree with you," I said, and sipped from my drink, sort of philosophically. "Or even the fragility of your way of life. This just is it in macro form."
