It only figured that the moment Cain had thrown himself fully into a new construction project, the whole damn Island seemed out to get him. The heat had ratcheted up so swiftly and so much in such a small amount of time that Cain was still boggling as to just what made it do such a thing and he was only happy that his work was half-done (having ( Read more... )

"Jesus Christ, it's hot."

Adam had come over to see Cain like he did often, to talk about Coraline, to not talk about her. It was a shared responsibility that they had, but, more than that, Adam thought. It was a friendship now. He walked over, arms crossed across a t-shirt that was already clinging to his body with sweat.

"You're a madman, Wyatt Cain."

"If I don't do this, I sit around sweating," Cain announced without even glancing up from the whittling of a corner he was busy with. "Glitch hasn't figured out air, yet. He's rigging up the fans," he offered, glancing up and giving a firm nod of greeting to Adam. "Care for a drink?"

"Some of us are happy to sit around sweating. You remember it ever feeling this bloody hot?"

Adam had spent years in Damascus; he should've been used to this kind of heat, but it was amazing how quickly your body forgot the extremes that it went through, whatever they were.

"I'd love one, mate."

There was a groan as Cain pried himself up from his seat and made his way to the river, where he kept beer brewed and stored in the cool stream. He shook the droplets off a bottle, handing it over. "Don't mind the beer in a jar concept," he offered. "Tastes the same as any other homebrew would."

Lucy was looking for Coraline; a swimsuit under her dress, she thought it the perfect day to go swimming. The homestead was a good place to find her, not even the heat stopping her from skipping down the path she took.

Seeing Cain outside in the middle of some project or other, she waved. "Hullo Mister Cain! Have you seen Cora today?"

The scowl on Cain's face happened almost automatically at the mention of Coraline. It seemed, lately, that she had been intent on finding herself as much trouble as she possibly could. "Not just yet," he said, voice tight and terse. "I imagine she's probably under Adam's watchful eye, considering things."

Cain always seemed a taciturn man, to Lucy, but a friendly one. The tightness in his voice was unmistakable, frowning herself upon hearing it; a ball of worry forming inside of her. "Why? Has something happened to her?"

Cain sighed as he shook his head, rubbing a palm over his sweating face. "She's fine," he assured with a nod. "Just found herself in a tight situation the other day. I'm told everything was resolved on the spot." How she had a penchant for finding that kind of trouble, Cain didn't even know.
