Remus didn't often visit the island memorial. He certainly had an appreciation for remembrance, and for honoring those departed, but he had no inclination to spend much time dwelling on past occurrences. Getting caught up in the past meant ignoring the present, especially when one had a past such as Remus' to reflect upon ( Read more... )

Lucy had noticed the pond, which hadn't been there a month or two before. She'd not gone to explore it yet, mostly concerned with the ending school year, and then the adventure to find the unicorns. That day, though, she'd decided to wander and see just what it contained.

Smiling at Remus as she approached, she gave him a little wave, "oh, hullo! I see you've had the same idea as I did."

Remus was still crouching at the edge of the pond, and had been wondering whether the building crew would give him a bit of wood for a sign when he heard Lucy greet him.

"Hello, Lucy," he said with a friendly smile, standing back up. "Had you known of this pond? I've only just discovered it was here."

"Only that it didn't used to be here, and now it is," she peered into the cloudy water, trying to see the creature beneath the surface. "I kept meaning to come over and see it, and hadn't a chance til now. Is that a beaver?"

Remus shook his head. "No, not a beaver. It's called a grindylow, and they can be rather dangerous if one is not aware of how to deal with them."

Elizabeth might have ignored it if the gentleman had not been staring at the pond. There were plenty of water holes on the island that were nicer, after all, the waterfall, the hot springs and so on. But she was generally curious and did wonder what was so fascinating about this particular pool. "What was that?" she exclaimed, peering over his shoulder at the shape that was certainly too large to be a fish.

Remus looked up at the question and gave the young woman a kind smile. "That was a creature from my home, called a grindylow," he explained. "They are mostly harmless, but can be quite dangerous if one is not familiar with them."

Elizabeth is not the slightest bit deterred by the mention of danger and she only gets closer to the surface trying to see the creatures. She dangles her hand near until one breaks the surface and jerks back falling on her behind. "Fascinating," she said at the actual glimpse of the thing. "From your home?" He sounds English to her but that doesn't mean anything on the island.

"They are, yes," he confirmed. "They can be found throughout Britain and Ireland, where I am from. They're also rather aggressive, as you've just observed." Her natural curiosity, whilst quite understandable, was precisely the reason Remus wanted to put up a warning sign.

"Remus?"

Angua was practically conditioned to pick up on body language, and the set of Remus's shoulders was tense. Something serious was happening in that pond.

"Thinking of going for a swim?" she asked, nearly at his side.

Remus turned at the sound of Angua's voice, raising up to stand next to her as she came up beside him. "No, I would advise against swimming in this particular pond," he said, glancing at her with a crooked smile, then turned his attention back to the water and the dark shapes moving within.

Angua followed Remus's gaze, and her eyebrows shot up. Those shapes, whatever they were, certainly didn't look like fish.

"...Do you know what that is?" she asked.

"It's called a Grindylow," Remus answered. "They're water demons, not terribly dangerous as long as one knows how to handle them."
