Anything Goes Performance

The end of the rain had come just in time to squeeze in a few long rehearsals before the big day. Cole had been running around like a fool all morning (with the help of Dairine), making sure that costumes were finished, the stage was set, seating was arranged, props were ready, the musicians had everything they needed... and on and on. Afterward, Cole felt exhausted, as if all the work he'd put into the entire production hit him at once. It was always a strange feeling, on closing night (and how strange here, to only be doing one performance!), like the relief and sadness and pride of watching a child grown.

A few people greeted him, and when there was a pause, he pulled out his silver cigarette case and idly flipped it open and closed. This was only the second opening night he'd spent without Linda, and he preferred not to think about the circumstances of the first. He hadn't missed her so much as this moment.

Still, as soon as someone else approached him, he had a ready smile waiting.

"You look pleased," Jack said as he approached. Once he was close enough, he planted a kiss on Cole's lips, his smile too wide to make it anything more than an affectionate gesture.

"You're amazing. It was amazing. I'm honored that you cast me."

"Of course I'm pleased! It was an utter triumph." Cole pulled Jack into a quick hug and assured him, "You were brilliant. Really. I may as well have written this role just for you. And your Maureen!" He smirked a little and added in a softer voice, "I'm not sure that I can even praise her acting since I think that she may have more than a little bit of Reno in her naturally."

"Maureen is one of the most talented, vivacious, wonderful women you will ever meet," Jack replied, letting the praise slide off. "And she's definitely got some natural Reno tendencies."

He'd known weeks ago that this would go well. Evey and Maureen and Joey and Summer and everyone had worked so hard. And, of course, he'd done well. Hard not to when he'd known the entire show for years.

He wandered through the crowd, smiling and shaking hands, giving kisses and saying thank you more times than he could count. This...this was the sort of thing he loved. This was where he excelled. He positively glowed as he wandered around, still wearing his fedora. He was definitely keeping his costume from this one.

"The hat becomes you," Mohinder said by way of greeting, lips already curving into the slightly wicked warm smile that Jack always brought out in him.

"As you see, I've kept my promise, even though you failed to live up to yours." Of course, he teased. He'd had no expectation of Jack playing matchmaker for him. In fact, he might've been offended if he had. Or not. It was Jack.

"I tried," he said, clapping a hand on Mohinder's arm. "I don't see him, though...guess he didn't come."

He'd been looking around the crowd for Logan but it was clear he hadn't shown up for the show. Jack tried not to let it bother him. Not tonight.

"I guess I'm not cut out for matchmaking."

"The story of my life, told through dating," Mohinder answered with a wry shake of his head.

"I find it hard to imagine you not being cut out for anything to do with the arts of love, but we'll pretend I didn't say that and skip to how you were magnificent on stage."

His smile deepened to a grin that was almost puckish. Who knew why, but having once had sex with Jack, it now amused him endlessly to tease Jack - especially since Jack hardly cared.

To be honest, Anything Goes wasn't one of Ianto's favorite musicals. (If asked, he had very few, if any, favorite musicals.) He had attended out of obligation to Jack and Charlie, and was pleased to see Bill and Bran performing, but in the end he had enjoyed himself well enough. Porter's work had always been a bit campy in Ianto's view, and while that was fine for a rainy Saturday in front of the telly, it was a different thing to watch it live.

He hung around after the show, waiting for Charlie and to congratulate everyone he knew. They'd all done an excellent job.

Briony could not have been more pleased with the performance. The spontaneous bursts of song had been off putting to her at first, but once she had gotten in the mood and accustomed to the style, she had enjoyed herself thoroughly. She didn't quite approve of the 'anything goes' sentiment, but in the end the right people had been rewarded with marriage to each other, and in the realm of theater there was little more that one could ask for than that.

Simon kept his eyes peeled for River the entire performance. The appeal of the musical as an art form escaped him. Why could none of these people simply say what they felt, without musical arrangement, and finish the story in one act? But the music showed off River's choreography, so he had to appreciate that.

"What did you think?"

River didn't need any kind of preamble to ask Simon's opinion. She knew it wasn't quite the sort of culture he would have sought out for himself, but she hoped he had enjoyed it anyway.

"You were amazing, mei mei," Simon enthused in his quiet way, still controlled though he was bursting with pride. "You really shone, and all the dancing was beautiful."

"Everyone tried really hard." River was proud of her dancers more than any other part of the show. "And it was fun, which is the most important part. Plus I think it would be interesting if life was more like a musical. There would be more dancing, at least. There should always be more dancing."

She didn't really think Simon would agree, but she couldn't help sharing her post-performance enthusiasm. A good show made her kind of giddy.
