Singing in the Rain (Well less singing and more splashing)

Oct 01, 2008 13:47

Coraline had barely been able to contain her glee upon waking up and finding the weather had turned for the worse. Staring out at the rain from her shared hut doorway, Coraline practically bounced on toes with glee. Sticking her hand outside she laughed as her arm and hand got covered in cold wet stuff that she very much associated with home. It ( Read more... )

He was wandering the island, when the laughter. Of course, there'd be plenty of people who would like the rain. Objectively, he preferred it to the endless heat himself. It was more the suggestion the rain made, than the rain itself.

Still, the laughter was enough to draw him away from the path to investigate it. Of the island children he knew of, he wasn't at all surprised to see it was Coraline. He was surprised, however, to see she hadn't bothered to dress properly, first. Considering how they'd met, however, he really shouldn't have been.

"Isn't that funner in boots?"

Coraline was wearing boots. Bright Yellow Wellington Boots. So she figured either Mister Mitchell was being silly or being really silly. What she really wanted to reply to him was by saying indeed but that wasn't nice to remind someone of home when they couldn't go there. Instead she looked at him confused.

"Are you being-" Coraline searched for the word she'd learned in class. Looking at him curiously she splashed in her wellies some more and then smiled as she remembered the word. "-sarcastic?"

Subtle would have been the word he'd have chosen. Open up discussion about appropriate...puddle-splashing clothing without outright telling a kid he barely knew to go dress properly. Personally, when he was a kid, a jacket, boots, and a scarf, did not substitute for real clothing.

"A bit, yes." He arched an eyebrow, and crossed his arms. "Aren't you...cold?"

Her coat, a bright blue duffel coat with hood, was one that her mother had bought her at home. It was at least two sizes too big and stretched down to her knees. Coraline would've rather liked it had it not been for the fact it was two sizes too big, her mother had told her that she would one day grow into it. But that day was not today.

"No, not really." Coraline said, though the mud and rain was making her pyjama bottoms stick against her legs. But that was okay she'd have a hot bath and put more clothes on and then come out into the rain some more and then repeat until Adam told her she had to go to bed. Or dragged her home. Either way. "It's much colder then this at home in the summer."

Wet from the top of her head to the tips of her toes, Karolina was badly dressed for the sudden rain. A hoodie was a poor excuse for a coat let alone a waterproof one, but Karolina wasn't bothered. It was different. She grinned up into the rain and squinted her eyes against it. She laughed and heard it almost immediately echoed by the sound of a younger girl shrieking and laughing.

She located the puddle stomper and called out, "That looks like fun!" She waved and made her way over, walking through the puddles in her flip flops.

Coraline looked at the girl's poor muddy feet and smiled giddily at her. People had mocked Coraline for wearing her wellies every single day but today she'd laugh at them in their incorrect footwear and say I told you so in a very petulant sort of voice. This girl hadn't however mocked her so she would at least be given a respite.

"It's brilliant fun, it's just like home." Coraline said waving back. "I've got some wellies if you want. All sorts of colours and ones with lions and dragons on them."

Brilliant. Karolina grinned. Wellies. It sounded like slang Molly would have picked up from somewhere.

"Do you think they would fit?" she asked and gave her own mud splattered calves a once over.

“I’ve got exactly thirty two pairs of wellington boots, only eleven pairs fit me and the others are either too big or too small. I got a lot of pairs of willies for my birthday, I was eleven, and the others are ones I’ve discovered.” Coraline said seriously. Wellington boots were not a joking matter. “So yes, I probably do have a pair that would fit. Wellies are the greatest, I’d wear them all the time but I know mum would be very unhappy if she found out I wore them to school. Even if she’s not here, I know she’d be somewhere at home grumbling about pleather and sensible shoes.”

Cain grimaced when there was suddenly mud splotched on his beige pants and he glanced up to see the perpetrator, only to find..."Coraline," he sighed at her and giving her a dubious and wary look. "Be more careful."

“You need a pair of wellies,” Coraline said, her hands tightened into little tiny fists as she danced in the mud like some sort of demented girl from the sixties. Coraline kicked the mud out, sending another muddy puddle in the direction of Cain’s silly beige pants. “I’m careful! You’re not going to wear them for the wedding are you?”

If he was then she’d have to cut very strategic holes in them or hide them before the wedding.

"No, Cora," Cain patiently replied, wandering closer to her and standing behind her, hands on her shoulders, so he wouldn't get splashed anymore. "Angela is going to work on clothes for the wedding and attempt to make me something, but it's still rude to go around splashing other people with mud."

Gods, it felt like a lecture to Jeb all over again.

"Well where I'm from it's rude not to jump in puddles with your favourite Coraline in the whole wide world," Coraline said wishing she could use her prettiest pleading daughter look but his hands effectively stopped that and stopped her from splashing too. Spoilsport. "Angie'll make you something pretty, she's really good like that. I told Adam that you should both have joint weddings but he said no."

Coraline paused, her face wrinkling up as she let out a rather large sneeze.

Lucy loved the rain. She'd made sure to dress against it, finding a slicker amongst her things and slipping it on before she'd run out of the house for the day. It was a glorious thing, utterly unlike the usual tropical showers that they had. Her sandals off, she ran barefoot through puddles, ignoring the chill in her excitement. This was a wonderful thing.

“Lucy! Lucy!” Coraline called spotting her friend doing the same thing as she was. Coraline might not have been wearing the proper attire for the weather but she thought Lucy was rather silly for not wearing proper shoes. “WELLIES! Lucy, you should borrow a pair of my wellies.”

"Oh!" Lucy's smile brightened when she saw her friend, dashing across open ground to meet her. "Do you have some? I didn't even realise I had a mackintosh until this morning."

Coraline wondered what a mackintosh was when Lucy mentioned it but she slowly put it together.

"Do you mean a mac?" Coraline asked curiously, the older words that Lucy used sometimes did confuse her at times but she was getting used to it. Especially when the soldiers at Cain's place kept teaching her new words and some of them not even words that Coraline was allowed to repeat in public. "I've got loads! People kept getting me them for my birthday and I've been collecting them. I've got ones with furry fleece on them and ones with stars on them and I've even got ones with dragons on them. But they're for Coin if they fit him."

Coraline wondered if she should ask Lucy if she was an alien. Johnny's book had quietly disheartened Coraline.

Dreary, rainy days were not made for going outside. They were made for staying inside, under covers, in bed, perferably with some human warmth beside you. But to get that, sometimes you needed to hike through a tropical forest doused in rain. So Angela had courageously bundled herself up -- as best she could with several layers of clothes -- and had struck out for Adam and Coraline's.

She shouldn't have been surprised to see Coraline first, but laughed at her antics all the same. "You just love tempting fate, don't you?"

Dreary, rainy days usually meant Coraline's mother banning her from going outside and meant finding a number of boring, dreary things to do. Like counting all the windows and doors in the house, watching all of her videos or finding curious doors that didn't go where they were supposed to. Having Adam, who wasn't as quick as she was in the mornings (usually because she normally had to wake him with bouncing and cold feet) meant that rainy days now meant puddles and fun.

"What does tempting fate mean?" Coraline asked curiously, covered in splatters of mud up to her stomach. She had streaks of it on her face and it clung to every part of her it could. "It's raining Angie, it's brilliant. It's just like home."

Still laughing softly, and smiling, Angela explained. "It means you know Adam's not going to be happy when he finds you soaking wet and covered in mud, but you're getting soaking wet and covered in mud anyway."

Coraline grinned at the explanation. It was very true but even the wrath of Adam couldn't have stopped her from going out to play. Nothing short of being tied down would have stopped Coralien from going out in the rain. She loved the rain from fine rain that covered everything in a fine spray to the type of rain that had you soaked in seconds. It was brilliant and perfect and so like home.

"I did tell him I was going out, I'm not sure he was completly awake though. You'd think being a spy would mean he was easy to get out of bed but it's not," Coraline said with a smile. Her face wrinkled up for a moment before she let out a rather large sneeze. "Eugh. Besides I'm going to give Adam a big muddy hug, then he'll have to forgive me."
