Simon Chicago didn't really intend to go out and have an adventure. In fact, he rarely ever intended to do anything, as he was a dog of simple needs: mostly he just liked to eat things he thought were good, chase the occasional stick if he could get someone to throw for him, and then go home and have his tummy rubbed. He could not, however, get ( Read more... )

Simon Chicago was no cat, but he would nonetheless have benefited from the story about what curiosity could do. He whined and pawed at the ground in frustration. Maybe Fiona could get the thing on the other side of the fence to come closer so he could get a look at it.

He barked, and the small dinosaur finally noticed him. A person might have been unsettled, being looked at by such a thing, but Simon just wanted to sniff it.

Chick was nobody's dinner. This was not something that would have occurred to her earlier in her life, but as she grew older and plumper it was a battle she seemed to have to fight an awful lot. Here deep in the jungle, though, far from all the hungry people, here she could just be Chick.

There were things more dangerous than hungry people, though, and Chick was worried that maybe they'd just found one of them. She couldn't bark like a dog, so she did what chickens do. She batted her ineffectual wings and clucked at it.

Simon had been taught that, while anything he found in the jungle was fair game if he wanted to hunt it, chickens were off limits. He liked to be "good boy" to his pack, so he didn't even growl at this chicken unexpectedly near him out in the wild.

He was glad to have an ally, anyway, when faced with what might be an enemy. Fiona just threw fruit, and wouldn't come down on the ground, and was uninterested in smelling new animals.

He barked at the not-turtle, and was pleased when it looked at him. He hoped it would come closer to the fence.

The fence-that-was-not-a-fence was not something Chick had ever encountered before, and so she had no reluctance to approach the strange new creature, trusting that someone had her back and that she would get away before becoming food.

It was hard to say what it was but it was definitely something that was bigger than her, even when she puffed herself up and strutted.

The master was heavily involved with his bits of wire and things, and had made it clear to Zoing that his assistance was not required. The lab was tidy, some tea was there in case he came out of the madness place long enough to want a drink, and he really couldn't find anything else to do. Thus bereft of purpose, it was a sad construct that had set out to explore the places he hadn't been taken to see yet. Maybe he would find something useful.
