Starting just before he realised Cecilia was on the island, Robbie had begun a regimen of morning runs on the beach. He had been one of the few in basic training who had not minded the daily physical regimen, and after a little while on the island found that he missed it. The building crew and now the island task force kept him quite busy these ( Read more... )

Sacharissa was herself headed toward the compound when she spotted Robbie coming along on the path, presumably headed toward his own home. It had been quite some time since she'd last spoken to Briony herself, and the circumstances had been less than likely to leave her with any particular feelings of kindness toward the girl who shared her face. Her life was her own business, and Briony's condemnations were more than a little unwelcome. Robbie, however, was a welcome sight indeed, and she smiled as she spied him. "Robbie," she called, "good morning. You're about early."

"Miss Cripslock," said Robbie, coming up to meet her on the path. "Good morning." He smiled, running a hand through his sweaty hair and then grimacing at it. "I'm usually up this time of day to take some exercise before it gets too hot out, and leave time to do other things."

That made sense enough, with the island heat being what it was at mid-day. She was glad to spend the worst of it indoors. "Far more reasonable than my reason," she said with a small, self-deprecating laugh. "I can't seem to shake the habit of going in to work early, even when there isn't much to do. How've you been?"

"Quite well, actually," he said. "Cecilia found out a few weeks ago that she's going to have a baby." She was far along enough now that they felt it was safe to speak of it more publicly, and Robbie could hardly stop telling people in his pride. "So I suppose you could say things have been very good, lately."

I still get up more often than not early in the morning because I'm used to a life that demands it of me, so when I'm out there, I don't expect to find anyone, not like today. Now, when there's no one around, it'd be just plain rude to ignore him and I nod my head. "Getting a good workout in?"

Robbie nodded, brushing away the sweat that threatened to drip into his eyes. "Best time of day for it," he replied, slowing his pace a little, allowing himself to catch his breath.

"That I do know," I smoothly agree and offer a friendly smile. "Just don't expect to see many other men around during a PT hour when they could be sleeping." I ease a hand out to be shaken, seeing as it's a good idea for him to know I'm not following him. "I'm Buck Compton, by the way."

"Robbie Turner," he replied, shaking Buck's hand with an equal measure of congeniality. "A pleasure to meet you." He shrugged at the mention of the early rising and grinned a little. "The early hours get to be a habit, after a while."

The heat had long settled into their hut that morning, insinuating itself with the stripes of sunlight edging through the slats in the shutters. With the changing of her body's hormones, Cecilia found herself to be quite affected by such things of late. Though she was wont to leave the familiar comforts of their bed, Cecilia knew she could not bear to become encompassed by humidity and its closeness.

Having taken to lounging on the grass in front of their hut, one arm strewn about her eyes to evade the sun's glare, Cecilia felt marginally better. Shoes had long ago been discarded and her skirts were tugged up to her knees. Both aided in providing her comfort. In fact, Cecilia was so relaxed that she had fallen asleep.

Robbie smiled when he saw Cecilia asleep on the grass outside their hut. It looked like a peaceful sleep and not an exhausted one; her limbs loose and relaxed, a small smile at the corner of her mouth. He knelt beside her and brushed a loose strand of hair from her face, gently enough that he would not disturb her.

Before she had become with child, Cecilia had been able to sleep through much commotion. However, she was a decidedly lighter sleeper as of late. There was the most delicate of touches to her temple, enough to give her cause to stir from her slumber yet not enough to give her a start. A low, sleepy noise sounded in her throat and she turned in the direction of the touch.

Stretching out beside her, Robbie propped up on his elbow and gently kissed her temple. It would be a great span of time before he tired of watching her sleep. "Don't wake up on my account," he whispered. "You need your rest."
