For the first time in what seemed like forever, Marcus woke this morning truly content. He couldn’t put his finger on what exactly had lifted the dark cloud hanging above him, his state of mind had been gently improving over the last couple of weeks but today was the first day he didn’t wake up feeling even a little unsettled or uneasy. At first ( Read more... )

Yesterday had been rather odd, what with Jack's stoned possible-flirting, but today would be good. Marcus' mood had been improving and she'd got the chest of drawers from John Amsterdam, so now they had places to put their clothes other than piles on the floor or in boxes.

She got up a bit after Marcus and practiced her piano warm ups, but it was so nice out she thought she might go for a walk instead. Marcus was probably in the compound having breakfast, and she'd find him in a bit, but for now, the beach was calling her. Even after more than two years here, she still had days of pure wonder at her surroundings and the peace she'd found.

Marcus did happen to be there once she arrived, and she smiled, approaching him and intending to accidentally fall over him until she saw him clutch something in his hand. At that point, she gave up on falling over him and merely approached him.

"Marcus?" she queried. "What's wrong?"

His first impulse was to push the bar back into the sand, pretend like he had never seen it. They had endured so much lately he did not want yet another complication, another potential threat. He had not been deliberately deceitful in this manner with Evey before and he was not about to start now, as tempted as he may be.

"Evey." He stood in one smooth motion and pulled her into his arms, being careful not to push the bar into her back. "I found something." he whispered softly into her ear.

That was a rather strong reaction for Marcus, but she allowed him to pull her to him without any resistance. Why would she resist?

"I suspect it is not something you wished to find?" she both asked and stated seriously. She wondered when the island would bring Marcus something. It had brought Teddy and V's knives to her, after all.

It must be a very small something, though, since she couldn't see it.

Stepping back only a fraction, almost afraid of not being in physical contact with Evey, he brought his arm between them and opened his hand.

"It's a rank bar, part of the military uniform from home. It was half in the sand like it had fallen off, unnoticed." He took a deep breath to steady himself.

"This belongs to Susan."

Tosh had gone down to the beach to do some yoga, leaving Jackson with Charlie and Ianto for a bit. It was relaxing out here, and quiet. She'd almost managed to clear her mind a few times, but Mark, Mimi, Owen, they all kept popping up again. Giving up, she gathered up her things, heading back toward the compound. As she passed Marcus, she paused, "Are you alright?"

Marcus looked up at Tosh momentarily, trying to summon a smile but failing. He continued to fidget with the bar in his hand, turning it over and feeling the surface of the metal.

"That's certainly the question. I'm still trying to figure that out, actually."

"Anything I can do?" The sun caught of the piece of metal in his hand, drawing her attention to it, "or is it a day for you and your thoughts?"

"I don't really know the answer to that either." His head was spinning, if he was really honest.

"I just found something," waving his hand about to indicate the bar but not really slowing to give Tosh a good look "and I think it might mean someone who was once very dear to me has arrived on the island."
