Jo had always found that the best things you can learn weren't in books at all, so she never went near the books on the shelf. Which wasn't to say she didn't find it interesting how it all changed every day.

But more interesting than that was this room, where she could find people to chat with. The woman in there had a terrible shirt on, but Jo could say the same about herself, so she made no comment.

She settled herself on the couch and peered over at the book the woman was reading. "Oh, it's all symbols," she said. She could never quite work out how anyone could read symbols.

"Oh, what was that like?" In her experience working for the government could be a good and a bad thing.

"Busy," Ros couldn't hold back any longer, "I'm sorry, you might not have noticed but I was reading."

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'll leave you to it." Jo got up and left her alone, but not before giving her a smile.

She forced a smile to her face, at least grateful that she listened, even if she didn't seem able to do anything else. "I'll be teaching it," Ros offered, almost as an apology, or as close to one as she'd ever get with some strange girl in the rec room, "at the school. Arabic."

Jo stopped and looked back at her. "Oh, that's nice." For a moment she was tempted to go and learn it. "But I had enough of school when I had to go." It might sound interesting now, but she was sure that once she got to a lesson it would be just like being back at school.
