When the island had transformed overnight into something out of an Indiana Jones movie, all exotic and full of temples, Peter got the feeling things were going to get interesting. If he had only known just how, he might not have gotten so excited. Sure, there were temples to explore and new plants and animals to look at, but he scarcely had the ( Read more... )

Claude marched into the clinic without pretense and announced, "Peter, something has got to be done about that damned dog."

"Nothing else has happened," Claude said irritably. "And don't try to psychoanalyze me, Peter. I'm fine. The only thing that's making me cry myself to sleep at night is the damn dog shedding on my pillow."

So Bennet disappeared not long after he and Claude had...shagged. "I'm not psychoanalyzing you. I'm just pointing out that you said 'it all ends in tears' but now you're insisting that you're fine." Obviously it isn't all fine, which is why Peter is so interested. "But you're not, are you?"

He doesn't expect Claude to answer.

Claude said nothing. What did Peter expect, for Claude to say that he had a broken heart? That was about as likely as him admitting to those dreams he used to have about Peter.

Right. That went as expected.

Sighing, Peter runs a hand through his hair again, tugging on the ends as he stares over at Claude. Clearly he's going to have to stop harping on Bennet -- for now. "If you're expecting me to say that I'll take Mr. Muggles in just so you can sulk and bitch and spend your days hating everyone again in the privacy of your hut, you should just think again. You're stuck with him, okay? I have too much going on to take in a dog who's already got a home."

Claude scowled. "But wouldn't you feel guilty if the thing suddenly came to a suspicious end?"

Though the truth was, he knew he couldn't do it. Claire had loved that damn dog.

"No," Peter says automatically, giving Claude a fierce look, "because that's not going to happen. Is it?"

Taking a step toward Claude, Peter stares at him hard. "Is it?" he repeats, not amused at all by the thread, whether it was simply meant to get him riled up or not.

Claude's scowl simply deepened at that. He didn't like being stared down. "No," he said grudgingly. "But only for Claire's sake."

"Right," Peter fairly snaps, over Claude's dramatics, "only for Claire's sake."

Saying her name gives way to a twisting in his gut. Suddenly scowling, Peter turns away, pretending to find something very interesting across the room. "Anything else or did you just come here to bitch?"
