The weather this past month was drier than it usually was on the island, closer to what he was used to in the Calla, though still a long way from desert. He could feel it in his bones though, just the subtle differences, the way the whole place changed like it was nothing. There are other worlds than these...He figured Jake must feel similarly ( Read more... )

Gazing through the wafting curls of smoke from his cigarette, Max grinned, lopsided and vaguely eager. "That's a nice dog you got there, Father," he called from his seat on the dunes. Maybe he should get a dog, just for company. It would be less work than a girlfriend, anyway.

Jake bounded back to Callahan with the ball in his mouth, and Callahan took it from him, wiping a slobbery hand on the side of his slacks. He smiled and approached Max, which Jake took as an invitation to march over and greet him as well, mouth open in a wide doggy grin, tongue hanging out.

"Thank you," Callahan said. "His name's Jake. Max, isn't it?"

The pup was greeted with an enthusiastic scratch behind his ears before Max turned his attention back to Callahan. "That's right, Max Carrigan," He confirmed. "Jake's a good name for a dog," he decided, although he couldn't pinpoint exactly why.

"Not a bad day for a walk," he added, and motioned to the horizon with his cigarette. "They don't make sunsets like this in New York."

"Named him after a friend of mine," Callahan explained. "He's a clever dog. Bilingual."

He looked out to the horizon and added, "Indeed they don't. I remember the first time I saw a sunset like this after living in New York for years. It was like a different world."

"Something's happened," Belize declared upon spotting Pere. Belize was on the beach, trying to remember exactly what happened, and the details surrounding it. The whole experience was cloudy to him and although it was probably something insignificant, it wouldn't leave his brain.

Jake bounded back up to Callahan just as Callahan was approaching Belize, looking concerned. "What is it?" he asked. "Is everything all right?" He wondered if Belize knew the girl who had died.

Moving his hand up to Pere's arm, Belize turned the priest's body so that they were facing each other. "Everything is alright, I think," Belize told him, blinking. "I need your wisdom." Belize was being very serious and felt that, although Pere was a vampire-fighting priest, he may be able to help with this little situation.

"Of course," Callahan said, his eyes showing the concern he felt. Jake, as if sensing something amiss, simply lay down at his feet rather than insisting on another game of fetch.

Davos sat on the beach and watched the sea every evening. It reassured him somewhat to look upon a familiar sight when he was so far from home otherwise. He was not so lost in thought, however, to be unaware of his surroundings so when the man and his hound walked past he called out a polite greeting to them.

"Good day, ser."

Jake bounded back to Callahan just as the priest lifted a hand in greeting. "Hello there! Lovely sunset, isn't it?"

Davos was a practical man and had little use for beauty for its own sake but he nodded anyway.

"I've always preferred the dawn myself."

Callahan chuckled. "There was a time when I was awake that early on a regular basis, but I must say, it's been a while since I've seen the dawn."
