Humanity sucked. It was a blunt, rude, and unfortunately completely truthful way of phrasing it. Ford had made fun of it before, skewered it almost mercilessly in his guide entry, and had eventually granted them a very grudging sort of respect. Then the planet got blown up and he'd forgotten about it entirely. It was an easier thing to do than ( Read more... )

Beth hasn't been sleeping so well lately, since the camera, since Holly's camera showed up (and got shoved underneath the bed and forgotten about, or she'd pretended to forget about it). She's been smoking more and walking more, ending up on the beach more often than not, leaving Teyla sleeping in New Atlantis. She walks and she smokes and she flicks ash and she shoves her hand through her hair and she thinks about the things that are on that camera that's under the bed and not forgotten.

"Can't sleep either?" she says, to the dark shape of the person in front of her, who looks like he's wearing a towel. There's something about the island the makes it okay to talk to strangers in the dark.

And then Beth thinks about the dark, and she shudders, all the way down her spine.

Ford kept staring straight up. For a second there he thought that he had seen a flash of something. "Yeah. I hate it when this happens."

Nothing. Not even a satellite.

Beth stands back, watching him, watching the sky. She's not sure what he's looking for, but, whatever it is, he's looking for it pretty damn hard.

"Happens to us all, mate."

Ford nodded, glancing over for a second and smiling, then looking back up.

"You'd think I'd be used to it by now."

Martha skulked a lot. Some not-so-generous people might have called it stalking, but to her mind it was simply a matter of assessing a situation before placing herself within it. Knowledge was safety, after all.

There were a number of interesting things about this bloke. The first and most obvious was that he was black, as to Martha's knowledge there were scant few minorities on the island. The second was that he was on the beach in he middle of the night. Sure, people went for night swims, but that led to interesting thing number three: He had a towel, as if he was intending on swimming, and yet hadn't made any move from the sand. Instead, he was staring up at the sky, as if he expected to actually see something there beyond stars.

Padding quietly across the dunes to stand several feet away, she cast a glance skywards and then looked back to the bloke's face. "Expecting someone?"

Ford looked over for a moment and smiled slightly sadly, sharp teeth flashing. "Just flying saucers, baby. I'm waiting for a way home and off of this rock." He didn't sigh, but there was a general resigned air about him as he went back to scanning the sky.

"You and me both," Martha replied with a low chuckle as she propped a hand on one hip. "Although I stopped believing it was going to happen a few months back." Waiting that long tended to put a damper on one's optimism. "Are you new, then?"

He kept watching the stars. "I've been here a few days, if that's what you think constitutes new. And I'm prepared to wait. I've waited fifteen years before, so this place will hopefully be a breeze."

Cecily walked out from her hut to find a strange man standing on the beach with a towel wrapped around it. It was nighttime, so he must not have been going for a swim, although that sounded like an awful lot of fun. But he did not look to the ocean, but rather the stars, which, she admitted, proved to be rather boring after looking at them for quite some time.

"Hello there, sir."

"Hey."

He turned for a moment, smiled briefly, then went back to searching. There had to be something out there.

Cecily cocked her head and began to walk towards the man, trying to look upward to find what he might be looking for.

"Excuse me, but may I ask what exactly you are doing?"

"Looking for flying saucers, baby."

He kept looking, maybe all his technology might miss them.
