"Can't sleep either?" she says, to the dark shape of the person in front of her, who looks like he's wearing a towel. There's something about the island the makes it okay to talk to strangers in the dark.
And then Beth thinks about the dark, and she shudders, all the way down her spine.

There were a number of interesting things about this bloke. The first and most obvious was that he was black, as to Martha's knowledge there were scant few minorities on the island. The second was that he was on the beach in he middle of the night. Sure, people went for night swims, but that led to interesting thing number three: He had a towel, as if he was intending on swimming, and yet hadn't made any move from the sand. Instead, he was staring up at the sky, as if he expected to actually see something there beyond stars.
Padding quietly across the dunes to stand several feet away, she cast a glance skywards and then looked back to the bloke's face. "Expecting someone?"
