Jack hadn't asked. He'd told. He came in after his dive, swooping appropriately this time, and he gathered up Jackson. Tosh had a basket of mysterious and wonderful things, which Jack couldn't have cared less about...except it meant that he could take the baby for a while since there were a couple bottles. And diapers. And a blanket. And a few ( Read more... )

House was always highly disturbed by how natural Jack looked with infants. It seemed like the sort of thing that would come back and bite him in the ass someday. Like when Stacy used to coo over them and say things like, "Can you just imagine a baby with your gorgeous blue eyes, Greg?"

To which he would respond with, "Actually, a lot of babies have blue eyes when they're born because their melanin production hasn't peaked yet."

And people wondered why he'd never been so great in relationships.

House walked over to Jack and said, "You should be careful giving the kid so much positive reinforcement for sleeping. Good boy, indeed. He'll grow up to be a lazy stoner."

"Actually, the book says kids his age can sleep more than sixteen hours a day and still be considered normal, as long as they're eating enough," Jack said softly. He'd done his homework. Prepared. Maybe not treating it quite like battle preparation, but he certainly didn't go in blind.

"Well it's not like he has anything else to do, does he? It's not like he's going to spend his time contributing something to society."

Jack turned his head and rolled his eyes at Greg. "He's not even ten pounds. I think we can cut him some slack for another few weeks."

"Is that yours?" Sarah Jane couldn't help the blunt question. As far as she was concerned, every soft question was simply leading up to something far more direct and obvious and it would be a lot easier to jump straight to the point.

Jack turned, his whole body, not just his head, and he smiled broadly. "No, none of the kids here can be blamed on me. His name's Jackson, though. After me."

He still hadn't quite gotten over the fact, and the smitten expression said as much.

Sarah watched with a particular shade of bemusement to her eyes, unable to help the amused laugh that bubbled past her lips. "Well, you did something right, obviously, to have the child named for you."

"Yeah, if I ever figure out what it was, I'll be sure to quit. Can't have an island populated by Jacks of different sorts," he grinned. "But, maybe one isn't so bad."

"Now that's a sight that never fails to make me smile," Daniel said softly, smiling and moving close enough to see both. "How's Jackson?"

"Sleeping," Jack answered softly. "For now, anyway. He was looking around when we walked up here."

"What was that you were singing?" he asked, keeping his voice quiet now that he knew that Jackson was sleeping. "Sounded Japanese." Which really didn't surprise him, considering Jackson's parentage.

"Oh, yeah," he nodded. "It's a traditional lullaby. From the Edo period," he said, smiling fondly against Jackson's hair. "...You speak Japanese?"

Coraline had wanted to take some new clothes but all the box had wanted to give her was midnight coloured jumpers and sparkly pink dresses. It was all too eerily familiar, despite the reassurance that this wasn't the other mother's world and was in fact an Island called Tabula Rasa, she couldn't quite accept those clothes easily.

So still dressed in her school uniform, Coraline dragged her school bag into the rec room. Sitting down near the man and baby, she took out her notebook and and green novelty frog shaped pencil case out of her bag.

"Hello," Coraline said politely as she started her maths homework. Just in case. Ms Woolett was a nightmare.

He turned his whole body away from the shelves and looked down at the girl. He hadn't seen her around, but he could have missed her. Maybe. Not likely, though.

"Hi there," he said quietly, so he didn't wake up Jackson. "I like the frog."

"My mum got it for me, for saving our school from aliens. They were trying to steal the school's hamster, his name was Ermengarde." Coraline said seriously, it was a story of course but none of the adults here seemed ready to believe that her parents had been kidnapped and that she'd nearly been killed by the other mother. "I thought I should do my homework, just in case."

Coraline drew a little smiley face in the corner of her page. "I'm Coraline. Not Caroline, Coraline-Coraline Jones."

"It's nice to meet you, Coraline," he replied. "I'm Jack, this is Jackson. Um...can I ask why aliens would want a hamster?" he asked, honestly interested. He'd know quite a few aliens, but hamsternapping wasn't common, so far as he knew.

Mack and Flo had been so fussy that morning that Eostre had eventually asked Abby to just take one of them away for god's sake, and Abby had obediently picked Mack up and done so.

They'd walked around the island a little, and then they'd decided to go up to the compound for some fruit...pureed for Mack, not so pureed for Abby. That had meant a trip to the bathroom afterwards to wash the pureed fruit off of everyone, of course. Slightly damp but with a squeaky-clean girl on her hip, Abby wandered into the rec room and came up behind Jack and his sleeping bundle.

"I see we both have babysitting duty today."

Jack grinned and nodded, but he didn't stop swaying. "Looks like. Do I look as good with a baby as I do in a tux?" he teased.

"Oh, of course you do, possibly better," she teased him in return. "Tosh needed a little break, I guess?"

Mack was grabbing at Abby's necklace again and she almost absent-mindedly brushed the little girl's hands away, giving her a plastic block to play with instead.

"Probably. I sort of didn't give her or Owen much of a choice," he explained. "I just took him. Is that Mack or Flo?"
