One of these days, Kira expected someone to offer up complaint about the smell of it all. She supposed it was unfair to her downwind neighbours who got the worst of it, especially when she opened the lids to batches that had been settling for days, but the wind here didn't settle right, so those neighbours were always changing ( Read more... )

Years without sight and hearing had left Tommy Walker's sense of smell much intact, and so he caught the scent of the dyes quite a while before he reached Kira. "What are these?" he asked, wrinkling his nose for a fraction of a second. "Anything you need help with?"

"Different shades of reds and greens," enlightened Kira, whose sense of smell was mostly faded when it came to things such as this, and while she noticed, since she wasn't as far gone as Annabella, she did not notice as much as she had in the beginning. She could identify colours by smell, but only when trying. "Probably, stirring definitely. Talking to someone other than myself of course."

"Well, then," Tommy said, with a wide smile, "just show me what to do and I'll do it." He could stand the smell for her, he figured, especially with the second thing she asked for. "Did these just show up, then?"

Biting the inside of her cheek, she looked around, surveying everything as she lightly tapped her stick up and down. "They did, isn't wonderful? Kind of just want I needed. All I want know is blue," she said, overeager at first, before laughing and shaking her head. Turning to look at him, she smiled. "I mean, woad, the plant that makes blue. And well...let's see what you can do, you can help me with the particularly awkward mixing that I can't reach...if the smell's not too much."

Abby hadn't been particularly social for a few days, not since Lisa had apparently disappeared, but it was time to change that. Moping got her nowhere and was annoying to everyone around her.

She was on another of her semi-regular walks around the island in search of plants when she came across a girl with a large pot of...something that smelled a little like...dye?

"That's an interesting smell," she commented cheerfully, smiling to make sure the girl knew she wasn't actually complaining, just noticing. There was a difference.

"Isn't it? It's not overbearing is it? People tend to complain," Kira noted, almost offhandedly, before she had a chance to look up and see who it was. It was true, no matter which way she looked at it, and she smiled at the newcomer, pushing the old anxiety to the back of her mind.

"It's just dye though...or it will be when it's done."

"Oh, no, it's not a problem at all," she reassured the girl. "I'm used to interesting smells, trust me. First it was dying my hair and now it's working with chemicals. Those actually smell nice compared to some stuff, believe it or not."

What a chemical was, Kira hadn't the faintest idea, but she felt that asking would make her look stupid, incompetent, inept, so she didn't. "Thanks, they're made with plants...well, mostly, these ones. It's not like I'm making yellow. Now that would probably be a bit harder to stomach."
