But I can show you a better time - baby, you can drive my car.

Eden had stopped trying to figure out how she was supposed to feel about the island. After all the horrible things it had done and the fact of Claire's disappearance, there were still a few important facts to consider in its favor. For one thing, she was there and alive, which kind of weighed in above all the other considerations. Her friends, ( Read more... )

You can't skate on sand. I might not be as brightas I used to be, but I'm pretty sure I can't skate on sand, so I'm just sitting there looking at my skates when something zips past me. I look up just in time to see Eden slow down in this little...fucking...hovering thing...

"...Hey?"

"Hey," Eden called, smiling brightly as she brought the - the car, she thought. For lack of a better word, for the sake of familiarity, it was a car, even if it was like no car she'd ever had before - she brought the car to a stop, idling not far from him. Leaning back against the seat, she looked over her shoulder. "Skates! Present from the island, I take it?"

It feels like such a ridiculous thing to say, but what the hell else was capable of handing out this stuff?

"Looks like it. I got some sticks and some nets and another set of skates."

I tilt my head and look at her. She looks real cute sitting up there.

"...What's that you got there?"

"It's... I don't know," Eden admitted, laughing. Gingerly, she landed the thing. It was different, a little, from anything she'd driven before, and she hadn't had a chance to drive in almost a year anyway, but she was determined to get the hang of it. Turning around in the seat, she leaned against the back, kneeling. "It's like an alien car or something, but the tag said it was for me. Are you gonna play hockey again?"

Stranger had just rounded the corner to his favorite stretch of beach-- the long straightaway with the hard-packed sand that he could really let go and gallop on. Sandor was letting him have his way with it; riding for pleasure was something he'd not had much of a chance for back in Westeros, but he'd found since Stranger arrived he could scarcely do without it.

He'd thought they were alone; certainly he'd thought if someone else was riding he'd hear them approach. And so when the sleek red thing appeared almost out of nowhere and came to match Stranger's pace exactly, Sandor was more than surprised. He was even more surprised to look over and see the thing being ridden (or perhaps driven) by a slip of a girl not much older than Sansa. Too caught in wondering what in hells the red thing was, he didn't say anything, just gaped at the girl like an idiot.

Eden slowed, glancing back when she realized she'd passed a horse and hoping she hadn't spooked the thing. It wasn't exactly something she'd ever had to worry about before, but there were lots of horses here. Other animals, too, she reflected; this thing would come in handy in case of attack by dinosaur.

By the look of it, though, it was the man she'd startled and not his mount. Her eyes widened at the sight of him, though she otherwise maintained control of her expression. He was tall, big, though probably not so much so as he appeared on horseback, but Eden wasn't in the habit of being intimidated. It was the scarring that took her off her guard, and she instantly felt shamed by her shock. "Sorry," she said, her smile almost sheepish. "I'm still getting the hang of controlling this thing."

"What in hells is it?" he returned, trying not to make it sound too accusatory. He didn't think it was her fault exactly, but still, anyone who enjoyed riding around in such a contraption was bound to have a dubious amount of common sense. Sandor had never seen anything like it before, but the girl was clearly happy with it. There was no accounting for people's tastes, he supposed.

"I think it's some kind of space car," Eden said, shrugging. "I'm not sure. It was outside my hut with my name on it." Around here, that wound up as good a reason as anything else, and she'd heard other people had been getting stuff, too. This was the first she'd heard of any hovercraft, though. "It's Eden, by the way. My name. Eden McCain."

"Hey, watch where you're...." Tim trailed off when he realized that the girl wasn't so much driving something, but flying something. "...flying that," he finished off lamely, staring more than was perhaps strictly necessary.

There was something about the look of it that reminded him of something, though, and it took a minute for him to place it.

"Isn't that from the Jetson's?"

"Sorry," Eden called back, turning to face the man side on. "I'm still sort of learning my way around it."

With her arm draping over the side, she narrowed her eyes in surprise and looked at her... car thing again as if for the first time. "Hey," she said, "you know, I think you're right. Weird." What the hell the island thought she had to do with the Jetsons was beyond her, but she wasn't about to complain.

"It's like the cartoon," he said, nodding. He'd always loved the Jetsons as a kid and they'd been ones that he watched a lot. "Except that yours isn't a laptop." Obviously. With everyone and their brother getting presents, he was beginning to feel left out.

He wondered whether or not the island was on Abby's side.

"God, I haven't watched that in forever." Eden grinned. "I used to love it when I was little." She'd watched a lot of TV as a kid anyway, installing herself in front of the television to keep herself quiet and entertained, and the Jetsons had always been fun. "It'd be kind of awesome if it was a laptop, though. Convenient."

Bennet had been avoiding Eden for some days until he had settled from his experience with Claude, but he found it too difficult, especially with Claire gone. Of course, when he did find Eden, he couldn't help but take off his glasses and rub at his eyes.

That didn't make the hovercar disappear at all. "Eden?" he asked warily. "Where exactly did this come from?"

"It was hanging out outside my door," Eden said brightly. "It had my name on it and everything." She slowed the thing until she had brought it to a stop, not far from Bennet, and smirked. "And I looked at it before I climbed in and turned it on. I don't think it's gonna blow up."

"That's a hovercraft of some sort," Bennet noted curiously, because it was there and...seemingly impossible. "I'm almost more concerned to ask if someone made this for you and if so, where have they been hiding the technology?"

"Like I said, it was outside my door," Eden said, shrugging. "I mean, either it's a present from the island or whatever like everyone keeps saying or someone around here has knowledge we hadn't previously counted on. And possibly a crush on me." It wasn't entirely out of the question.
