River had just been looking for something to read. The bookshelf hadn't been mean to her in a long time, so she had figured they had reached some kind of unspoken truce. She didn't even think it was being mean just now, just presumptuous ( Read more... )

"So, it's started," I smirk, lowering myself down in front of her and the chaos of magazines scattered across the floor. I'd been engaged about twelve hours before the whole fucking bookshelf changed for me, shifting from self help to wedding planning and other examples of domestic hell. Now it's settled on parenting books, which really is just fucking mean, but I've gotten well past the point of being surprised.

"You alright there, River?"

River looked up from the page she was staring at, eyes wide with encroaching panic. "I'm... shiny, I guess," she said after a moment. "But where are we going to get glass bowls to put marbles in, and marbles to put in them? And what are they for? They're in almost all these pictures so they must be important. Are they a symbol of something? It doesn't say."

Marbles?

"I think it's just supposed to be pretty," I say, brows hiking their way up my forehead as I reach over and take one of the magazines, "They must've been in style or whatever when these magazines came out."

Jesus Christ, she's gonna blow a fuse.

"Oh. I don't I want them, anyway, if they're not important. But I don't know what is important. I thought we were just going to have Shepherd Book say some words about how we belong to each other and then have some cake and dancing. I don't even know what those people are doing." She pointed at a picture of a bunch of formally dressed people in a conga line. "It just seems a lot more complicated than I expected."

Glinda looked at the picture of the fluffy white dress on the magazine page. It was sparkly and wonderful. "That's beautified!" She said in awe.

River jumped, startled, and looked up. She knew Glinda a bit from having been in the play, and would definitely have guessed her as someone who would like just that kind of dress. River, on the other hand, couldn't even imagine herself putting it on unless it was a costume.

"I... I guess," she said slowly. "Seems like a little but much, to me."

"Possibly, if it was afternoon tea, but for a ball or a party, it would be just right." She nodded intently, "What's it for?"

"It's not for anything, as far as I'm concerned," answered River bluntly. "I haven't found anything useful. Just... a bunch of stuff I don't know what do do with. I don't want to look like anything fluffy when I get married. I want to look like me."
