His rage, his anger, his loss had all culminated in the brilliant flash of something that no parent wanted to name. The pinnacle of Bennet's search of the Island had turned up in something absolutely empty-handed and final, giving him an answer to the question he had never wanted to pose.

What happened to Claire?Gone. He didn't trust in any search ( Read more... )

So, the only bad thing about not staying in the Compound anymore is that the kitchen and showers are a helluva walk away. Which, ordinarily Tim wouldn't mind so much, but in the snow it's a bitch.

He clomps into the kitchen, snow still on his shoes and jacket half off when he sees the guy leaning over the sink and stops for a minute. The guy looks familiar, but only because Tim's sure he's seen him around a bunch. Like people in Dillon, but this isn't Dillon.

"Hey, you okay?" Tim asks after another moment of silence and finally manages to get his coat off, draping it over the back of a chair.

Bennet's deep breath was more for himself and to calm his demeanor than anything else and a quiet look over at the young man is used as time to calm himself. "I'd go so far as to say I've had better days," his reply came evenly, almost thoughtfully. He didn't give up his hold on the counter just yet, though.

Tim tugs off his gloves and drops them on the seat of the chair, glancing over at the guy only briefly again as he falls silent. Tim's not exactly a nosy person, so he chooses not to ask anything further, but instead heads toward the fridge.

"Want somethin' to drink?" he asks, leaning into the fridge to pull out a container of something. It's not beer, unfortunately, but he can never stop hoping that one day he'll find a six-pack in here.

Bennet gestured to the dripping pot of coffee, yet another contribution to the cacophony of small noises that brought him to a point of near-snapping. "I've got coffee on the pot," he promised.

Caffeine probably wasn't the best idea in his current mood, but it would help him to keep from falling into a drowsy, unalert state.

"Where is she?" Claude demanded as soon as he saw Bennet in the kitchen.

Bennet turned on Claude, his whole posture and attitude radiating not today as he glared at the other man. "You think I would be here without her if I knew?" he demanded. "I've searched. Everyone's searched. We don't know."

He hated not knowing things.

Claude leaned against the table, sagging a little. He'd known something was wrong ever since he'd woken up and found that damn teddy bear on the extra pillow beside him.

"Well at least we know it's not Sylar," he muttered.

That in itself was a tense subject with Bennet, who had been so willing to kill him after he had killed Eden and then escaped, and he gritted his teeth together, managing out a, "Thank God for small miracles, I guess."

Eden didn't cry as a rule, but the threat of tears was there all the same, pricking hot and sharp behind her eyes. She didn't panic either, or she preferred to think she didn't, but it was hard to argue with the evidence at hand. When she caught sight of Bennet through the open door, she half-ran toward him, arms folded against herself. "No sign of her yet," she said, gritting her teeth. The IPD hadn't found anything either, but that didn't mean Claire wasn't still out there somewhere.

Bennet had been calming himself by staring at the drip, unwilling to close the faucets so it would stop. "People think that they return home when they leave here," he said, somewhat distantly. "I'd like to think there's some failsafe I've put in place to protect her there."

"You think she's really gone?" Eden asked, her voice cracking. She'd gone past being a rational creature, and his apparent calm was bewildering to her now. "I mean... Of course you did. You always have a plan, but - but she could still be out there."

"I've searched," he said tiredly, his voice a dim echo of its usual strength and it only faltered for a single moment. "If she were out there, I would have found her, no matter what danger waited."
