On top of the hill....

Jonas stretched out with a yawn and prepared to run outside, down to the beach perhaps, to play. As he left the hut, his eyes became locked on the Grey sky above. There was a coldness in his body both from the decrease in temperature and from utter shock. Jonas stepped out and placed his hand in front of him.

SnowImmediately, without thinking, ( Read more... )

Charlie saw him fall on the path ahead of her and she broke into a run, slipping in her too big boots and the hood on her coat slipping into her eyes.

Just because you wanted to stop caring didn't mean that you actually did. Not overnight, anyway. You couldn't harden your heart that quickly.

"Honey?" She reached for him, tugging off her mittens and touching him with chill fingers. "Baby, are you okay?"

Jonas looked up, dizzy. His eye were clouded and watering from the cold.

"Yes...I think..." Jonas looked around and stood up. Pushing himself off the ground, he felt the cold snow turn to water under his warm hands. "I've never had a positive experience with snow.."

"When I first got here, it was snowing," said Charlie, brushing snow off of his shoulders. "It was snowing, and I thought I'd wished myself clear into a dream I'd been having."

She looked around her, and her face was still except for the barest twitch of the corner of her mouth.

"Come on, honey. We gotta get you warm."

Jonas smiled at the girl's politeness. "When I left the Community it was snowing..." Jonas trailed off, saving his breath to blow hot air into his hands. The warm breath tingled his hands. "I lost Gabri- my brother died in the snow." Jonas corrected as he looked out in the distance, hoping they were leaving the cold soon.

Cecily had been wandering the path when she noticed someone in the distance falling to the ground. Curious, Cecily thought while tilting her head to the side while looking at the boy. It took a second for her to realize that he might need help.

She quickly made her way over the boy and tapped on his shoulder, "Sir...sir are you quite alright?"

"I don't think so..." Jonas said as he sat up. His hand was now resting on top of his head, trying to subdue the dizziness. "Why is there so much snow?"

Cecily had indeed been wondering the same thing over the course of the day, but she finally came to the conclusion that it was all part of the island's strange behavior. Well, this idea was not exactly her own, but eavesdropping did very much help her.

"I am not quite sure, really. I have hardly ever seen snow, so it was a bit of a shock for me when I woke up in it." She paused and reached her hand toward the boy, "I am Cecily Cardew." Another short pause before a question just blurted out of her mouth, "What is wrong with snow?"

Because of his inherent manners, Jonas greeted this Cecily Cardew with a polite half-smile and returned a handshake. Although he did this with the facade of politeness, he was really very confused as to why she was so pleseant and so unconcerned about his well-being. But then a real smile crossed his face. He was thankful for it. At least he wasn't embarrassed about fainting; she hardly seemed to care.

"I've just had a rather bad experience with snow..." Jonas said, looking at the flakes falling endlessly from the sky. "Cecily. That's pretty. There was a newborn named Cecily at the previous ceremony." Jonas told her, looking up.

Peter had, grudgingly, donned a thick blue coat pulled from the clothes box that morning. He had gloves on too; Eostre had insisted that he would freeze his fingers off otherwise, even if they made his hands clumsy.

He was out exploring and about to say hello, when suddenly Jonas collapsed. Hurrying over, Peter was leaning over him just as he opened his eyes.

"I think you fainted," he said, a deal less concerned now that Jonas wasn't dead. "You fainted like a girl."

Jonas scowled at the sound of Peter's voice. Not only had Jonas looked up to see Peter standing there in clothes that looked enticingly warm, but he was also being made fun of.

"You'd faint too if you didn't have Eostre to warn you to dress properly. You wouldn't have the smarts to do that yourself." Jonas shot back viciously. He was cold and upset, and perfectly justified in his retaliation. Or so he told himself.

"Looks like you haven't got the smarts to do it yourself either," Peter said and kicked up a bit of snow so it hit Jonas's shoe.

But then he dug a hat out of his pocket and tossed it so it landed on his face. "Come on, you can put that on. Then we'll get you normal clothes so you stop swooning like a girl."

Jonas decided it best not to retort. Instead, he took the hat and placed it over his head so that it covered his now red and freezing ears. He followed Peter quietly.

"I heard no swooning." A last jab was necessary, Jonas thought to himself with a smile as he returned the kick of snow in Peter's direction.

Dennys didn't see the kid fall, but he did see a body in the snow, and he immediately ran over (as best he could in his winter gear) and knelt down in the snow. "Hey," he said, gently laying a gloved hand on the kid's shoulder. "You okay? Can you stand up?"

Jonas blinked his eyes open, but it did little good. Tiny snowflakes seemed to find their way to his pupils directly, causing the blur to persist.

"I'm ok. Just surprised, I think."

Dennys frowned slightly, wanting to make sure the kid was okay, even if he had a limited knowledge of medicine. "Did the fainting take your by surprise? Did you feel totally normal before you blacked out?" he asked, taking off a glove so he could press two fingers to the carotid artery. At least that seemed to be okay.
