When Callahan's nightmares had started seeping into the daylight, he'd thought that he was just getting senile. But this morning when he stepped out of the church, he knew that what might once have been a nightmare was now very, very real.

The vampires were no longer darting in and out of his periphery but rather right there, a good half dozen ( Read more... )

It's been an eventful day. I think I was fairly safe up in the treehouse, but I have a lot of ammo and a lot of experience dealing with dangerous creatures, and to be honest, I could really use some time letting loose. So I geared up and got on the bike and took off.

This, the swarm of, it looks like, vampires crowding the church looks like it might be a god deal of fun.

But what to start with? I pull my shotgun from my back, pump it across my arm, and blow one of the creatures heads off as I bring the bike in a roaring curve around them. It collapses into soot. Very nice effects. I dispatch another in the same way and a third as I drive through them until I bring the bike up in a sharp skidding halt, around so the back wheel is against the church and I'm facing the gathering of undead.

"Good afternoon, Father."

The commotion of the girl on the bike killing their comrades sent two of the creatures dashing back into the ones, and the third (perhaps the dumbest of all) backing up towards the church. Its foot hit the line of holy water and it shrieked - but not for long, as Callahan grabbed the knife out of his back pocket and jabbed it up through the back of the thing's skull, with some effort. It dusted. More clothes.

He turned gratefully towards the woman. "Very well done. Have you seen more of them?"

"A number. They seem to crop up in small swarms and disperse the same way. Decapitation works, doesn't it?" I ask and, conservation of ammo in mind, pull Excalibur off my back and swing it around experimentally, once. I love that little hum it makes as it cuts the airs.

"Decapitation, yes," Callahan said. "Guns and knives will work on the ones out in the daytime, if the injuries inflicted are severe enough. Fire is also a good option, but I'm not sure where to get our hands on a flamethrower."

After Aaron I'd gone back to the Compound-- or tried to. Seein' the dead bodies crucified outside, I think I'm in a little over my head, and figure it's about time to get the hell outta Dodge. Only problem is, I start bein' followed by a coupla nasty lookin' things that it doesn't take me too long to figure out are vampires. I seen the movies, y'know, but even here I never thought I'd be facin' this stuff down for real. Happy fuckin' Halloween, everybody.

I'm not what you'd call slight, but I can move it when I gotta move it, and as two of the nasties turns into five, I think it's reached the "gotta" stage of things. I start runnin', wishin' like hell I still had my bike, not even knowing where I'm running to, only that it's away from them. I don't mind admitting I'm pretty freaked, but not freaked enough yet to start wavin' my arms and yelling for help ( ... )

Callahan had just dispatched one more of the creatures surrounding the church when he heard yelling and saw someone running towards him. As he got closer, he recognized the young man.

"Eli! Into the church! As fast as you can!" He offered up a prayer that none of the vampires managed to grab the young man before he could make it.

He set about trying to distract the ones already there. A fistful of holy water went into the face of one, and a round of shots from his gun into the head of another.

"I'm tryin'!" I yell, jumpin' about a mile in the air as one of the Padre's shots hits home, and the head of a vamp not two yards away from me explodes-- explodes, just like in the movies. Now I seen some crazy shit, and done some too, I'd be lyin' if I said I was a stranger to violence. But I never thought I'd meet a priest crackin' off a shotgun like it was as easy as lifting the Bible.

One of the other vamps grabs my arm and growls at me, and I do the only thing I can think of; I punch him in the teeth. Maybe it's my fist and maybe it's surprise, but he's startled for long enough for me to rip my arm free and lunge the last few yards into the church. "Holy shit," I gasp, tryin' to catch my breath, then cross myself with a sorta guilty grin as Pere Callahan looks me over. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize for that," Callahan said, "not today."

He looked out the door at the vampires still lingering outside, hissing and glaring at them. "I have lots of bullets left!" he warned them, and then turned back to Eli.

"Are you hurt?" he asked. "Did it bite you?"

When it was finally sunset, Xander had had enough of hiding. Finally, he could do something to help people now that he wasn't worried about turning to dust himself. Plus, the slaying would help him keep his own panic at bay, which he'd struggled with all day, at being a vampire himself. The demon had been eating away at him and now he just wanted an outlet for it.

Oh look. More vampires. That would work.

He hurtled out of the jungle, stake in hand, and snarled as he attacked a group of the vampires that were hanging back away from the holy objects brandished by the priest. He let the demon take over and do what it did best, reigning it in enough that he wouldn't attack the ones defending the church. He just hoped he could keep it in check...

When night had fallen, it was just as Callahan had feared - the Type IIs had come out, less of them, but each harder to kill, and each hungrier.

"Be careful!" he warned the young man, but then saw that he had a stake as well.

... and were those fangs?

Completely confused, Callahan backed up into the doorway of the church so that he could get a better look without worrying about being attacked.

At being yelled at to be careful, the demon turned and snarled at the priest in full game face, which unfortunately he'd been stuck in all day. Seeing the human standing there, it remembered that it was hungry...

Xander shook his head and squashed that thought before it had full formed. He may be letting the demon out to fight but there was going to be no attacking people. He'd rather starve.

"I'm on your side." He growled, before he attacked another bunch of vampires. He noticed they were becoming harder to kill and his demon relished the challenge. Xander was relieved. If it was concentrated on something it was easier to deal with.

Callahan lingered in the doorway, not quite sure what to do. If he was telling the truth, then the priest didn't want to risk throwing the light from his cross around, or holy water. Though to his credit, the newcomer seemed to have things well in hand.

Anita didn't have any of her abilities back, but it didn't take long for her to realize that something was very wrong. Whether or not she wanted to accept it this was something she had experience in so she slung her vampire hunting gear on her back, loaded her gun and soon found herself in the thick of things. It felt strangely good, not that she wanted to be doing this again everyday but it felt like her.

"I don't know if I have enough holy water, Father. Can you help?" It was a large bowl from the kitchen. She would hopefully return it safely.

Callahan had managed to fend off the vampires at the door, dusting a few more, and the rest escaping into the jungle. But judging from the other things he'd seen this day, there were more where they came from.

He ushered the young woman into the church and nodded. "Yes, of course." He dipped his fingers into the water and crossed it, murmuring under his breath. Then he nodded to a few empty bottles next to the jugs by the door. "Those might help."

She nodded filling whatever she got into her hands. She gave him a couple of the bottles. She pulled out her last few rounds of silver ammo. "I hate to use this, but it's the only way they won't heal." She might have muttered under her breath but she supposed this once she could be forgiven.

"How did they get here? They are supposed to go back to being human."

"If you hit them enough, regular bullets will kill them," Callahan said. "At least, the ones out in the daytime. If there are some waiting for nightfall, I'm afraid the gun won't do much good, silver or not."

He sighed and added, "And I've no idea. But from what I've heard they aren't the only evil creatures to have turned up on the island today."

Wesley had been in a hurry to help and gathering his stake and a holder of water, he had gone to the only place that he knew as best in the event of demonic beings, vampires, and other abhorrences of nature.

The church.

"I don't suppose you would bless some water!" he asked tensely as he hurried, stake tightly in hand. It was rather just like being home again.

He looked out the front door. "Do you know how many are left? I've killed... four, maybe five, and seen nearly that many get away."

Wesley was quick on his feet, always had been, especially after he had learned that vampires had supernatural speed along with their strength. "It seems endless," Wesley spoke breathlessly as he wandered inside, letting the hand holding the stake to relax.
