Birth was a magical and wonderful thing, or so Anya'd been told. She still wasn't sure she was looking forward to the sheep giving birth in a few weeks, but the chickens, that had been a different manner. Shortly after the barn was finished, and the electricity was wired to the incubation room, she and Anne had put six eggs in for incubation. ( Read more... )

"Now, you've got to be gentle," said Eddie as he held Emmy's hand and led her into the barn. "Like you were gentle when the puppies were very small." Well, actually, hopefully a little more gentle than that. "They're very small and you might hurt them."

"Chick!" said Emmy, showing no sign she was paying attention to what her father was saying to her other than the fact that they were going to see the chicks.

Anya gave the man and the little girl nervous smiles. "Are you here to see the chicks?" She had one in her hand, peeping and pecking at her palm, and she knelt down, hoping the girl would be gentle.

Emmy held her hands behind her back for a moment and looked up at her dad. Only when Eddie nodded at her did she reach out and poke at the chick with one finger.

"Chick!" she said again, a little louder than was necessary.

The chick peeped again, and tried to run down Anya's arm, likely a bit scared. Anya shushed it, and put it in the box with it's mates, sitting beside it. "They are chicks, but they're little so you have to be gentle, see?" She patted one gently.

Anya had been bubbling about the chicks for a week and Xander had promised her he'd come see them.

Which is how he ended up in the barn, cradling a soft little yellow ball of fluff named after his best friend. And even thought he'd doubted slightly when Anya had told him what she'd decided to name them, even if half the names were unfamiliar, due to the sharp pang of homesickness in his heart, he was glad she had as now oddly enough, holding the small Willow named chick made him feel content and happy. Willow would have liked her chick, Xander had decided.

"Xander, please don't scare Willow. If she has a heart attack, she'll never grow up to be big and strong, will she." Anya paused for a moment, "Do you think that because I've named her Willow she'll be a lesbian?"

The Willow chick peeped happily from where it was cradled in the warmth of Xander's hands, brightening his smile a little more. "I think she's perfectly fine An, don't worry. You should know me well enough that I won't let anything to anything baring the name Willow." He held the chick up so he could look it in the eye. "I bet your just as fiesty too." He said to in mock seriousness.

Then he looked up at Anya with an amused look on his face. "I'd watch her around that Tara chick then. Or hope one of them's a rooster." He couldn't help grinning. He'd heard the names of the Tara, Willow and Giles chicks before completely zoning out, so thus had only asked about the one unfamiliar name. He figured the others coul wait.

To Anya it sounded like a nervous peep, and she tried to see into Xander's hands where the chick was likely being crushed. After a moment she gave up, breathing heavily in frustration. Her arms crossed over her chest, she wondered if maybe this would be a good time? "There's nothing wrong with being gay, you know that right? And if chicken Willow and chicken Tara are, then that's fine."
