He wasn't going to let this get to him. The wind blew a bit harder and the whispers kept going, persistent, just a bit louder, to demand attention. To demand surrender. But he wasn't going to. He wasn't bloody going to acknowledge this madness. He flinched as he saw a hand. He wasn't going to let any of these people near him either. He knew what ( Read more... )

Alex was still looking for further signs that he was or was not being watched. Anything would work, a bug, a hidden camera, a spy. When some guy almost ran into him before very suddenly stopping, Alex couldn't possibly guess that his searching had been answered or that a German was probably the last thing needed right now.

"What the fuck? Are you alright?"

"It is good German beer. You will like it, I promise. Better than English beer. Much better."

Guy smiled at that, more genuinly than before, the lunacy of before slowly fading, moreso because of the promise of alcohol.

"You brought it with you or did it appear out of nowhere?" He asked.

Alex smiled back at Guy. "I had a pack of six when I came. But I have not had any yet. I am trying to save them for a good occasion and time. I think this counts as a good time for the beer."

"I think it does." Guy grinned and patted the other on the back as they walked in.

He wasn't a great fan of beer, but right now, anything would do.

While Alex happened to be quite a large fan of beer. It was almost expected of him from a cultural standpoint.

They were almost at the compound by now and Alex stopped Guy. "Wait here. I will go get it, yes?"

"For you to get it from your secret hiding place?" Guy laughed, but then corrected himself. "Sorry, no. Yes, I'll wait." He said with a smile.

Alex nodded before walking back to the compound. "Yes. It is hidden but I will come back with it."

After a minute or so, he came back with the six pack and a bottle opener. "See? Good beer."

He held his laughter in when Alex confirmed that he did have it hidden. It was an inward joke and there was no reason to share it. So he did hold it in. Mostly.

"I am in your eternal debt." Guy announced, cheerfully and a tad dramatically.

"No trouble. I like helping. Here." Alex handed him an open bottle. "Only one for each of us. I don't want to run out too soon. I do not know when I will get more."

"Very sensible." Guy said. Though, if it had been his stash it wouldn't have lasted more than a day. He sat down on a rock and clung his bottle against Alex'. "Cheers." And took a generous gulp.

"Yeah." Alex did the same, taking a large drink of his own. "Is this the only alcohol here on this island? If it is I may commit suicide."

Guy laughed. "There's something called moonshine - but don't let its sweet name deceive you - it's quite horrible." Another gulp. "And I make wine. Which you are welcome to try, if you like."

"Really? What do you make it out of here? I have not seen any grapes yet here."

"Palm tree sap." Guy clarified. Then he smiled and looked at the other. "Sounds as promising as moonshine, doesn't it? Well, you would be right. But at least it's a drink and it's available."

Alex stood lost in thought for a moment. "My father used to say that Germans can make schnapps out of rocks and still have it taste good. I'll have to see if he was right."
