Sharon wasn't really willing to do much yet. Leoben didn't blame her and it seemed wrong not to offer to give her sometime to herself. He could imagine only too well what she was going through now that Helo had disappeared and he had strongly doubted she wanted to have him tell her how sorry he was over and over again ( Read more... )

Hawaiian shirts.

For going on two weeks now, all the box'd give him was Hawaiian shirts. Now, Bill had nothin' against Hawaii. Never had the opportunity to go, it being the type of place a man takes his wife or a real serious girlfriend and the last time he'd had either o' those was around never, but it weren't a place he had any harsh feelin's toward.

What clothes he had on his back, aside from the uniform, had never really been of much concern. Only thing was, it had started to take on that feelin' of a joke that'd gone on just a lil' too long.

But it wasn't his night for patrol and he'd given the uniform a rest, amblin' into the rec room to find hisself a book and decked out in bright red and white tropical flowers. He couldn't help but smile at the downright disgruntled lookin' toddler scribblin' away and her haggard companion tryin' so damn hard to appease her.

"Reckon that kitchen o' ours could use a little sprucin' up."

Leoben hadn't seen Mal in a very long time and he had never seen the space cowboy in a Hawaiian shirt before. He was vaguely amused and he felt vaguely sad that he never talked to Mal much. He never even bothered to visit Serenity.

"It'll be pretty spruce by the time she finishes filling up all these pages," Leoben replied, smirking slightly. "How have you been?"

"I been just fine," he said, gettin' that newly familiar feelin' like he was talkin' to somebody thought they knew him and he was pretty darn certain he hadn't met them a single time in his life.

Happened a lot lately. Was just the sorta thing a fella had to get used to.

"This little lady yours?" He figured the possible mistaken identity'd work itself out soon enough.

Leoben blinked, rubbing the back of his head slightly as Hera tugged at the purple crayon in his hands. He gave it to her and smiled. This probably wasn't Mal then. It was hard to tell the difference at first, but this guy didn't even seem to know who he was. "No, this is my niece. My daughter's with her mother."

Kara had tried to sleep. She needed to sleep, but even with Calliope in the crib and quiet, sleep wouldn't come. She debated leaving her daughter there while she went for a glass of water, but in the end, Kara didn't think she could bear the few minutes away from Calliope that it would take.

So she bundled Calliope into a blanket and slunk down the Compound halls on bare feet. Graceless as she sometimes was, Kara didn't make a sound. On some level of her consciousness, she meant to hide from whatever the island had in store for her next. It'd taken Helo, who was to say it wouldn't soon take Leoben? Or Lee? Or Clay? Or Mamet? Even now, the sight of them was almost was too much to bear, so Kara chose to avoid the notice of all.

She didn't say much when she walked into the rec room. Just touched Hera on the head, Leoben on the shoulder, and went to the couch where she could hear them play.

Leoben glanced up when he noticed Kara's hand on Hera's hair. For some reason it was a bit of a relief. Probably because the idea of coming back to their room and not finding her or Calliope there scared him. He murmured a quiet "Hello" as Hera snatched a neon pink crayon away from him.

Kara stretched out, settling with Calliope on her chest. "Hey. What're we drawing?"

"I'm drawing a technicolored basestar," Leoben told her before scratching his head as he stared at Hera's. "And she is drawing... uh...well..."
