curling lessons, now (finally) happening

Oct 09, 2007 17:36

Now that Lennox was finally feeling better and he knew he wouldn't get into trouble from Stephen for going into the rink and actually curling, he'd thrown up a sign on the bulletin board a few days ago, announcing that the first curling lesson was finally going to happen that Tuesday. If he was completely honest, he wasn't sure how it was going to ( Read more... )

Lily and Emmy were sitting in the stands, watching the lessons going on. Lily had decided that it was a good idea to keep Emmy off the ice on this particular occasion. Emmy was reading a book and Lily was brushing her hair.

"Curl!" yelled Emmy, and Lily raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, kidlet. Curling."

"She's getting more in her hair than in her mouth," said Eddie, "but she's trying pretty hard, actually."

"I love both of you," said Lily, kissing Emmy's forehead and Eddie's cheek. "Very much."

"Hola, cara," Stephen said politely to the enthusiastic young girl he had met on the beach with Mr. Lennox. To her mother, he added, "Good day, madam; I am Doctor Maturin. I have been been attempting to teach your daughter to speak Catalan, though without much success so far, I fear."

[Hello, dear]

"Catalan, eh?" Lily grinned and held out her hand, while Emmy waved her arms like a mad-child at the obviously familiar face. "Well, good luck to you. I'm Lily."

Stephen had read through the island directory, but had not memorized it; nevertheless, the name struck him as familiar, for he had particularly paid attention to the names of the island's medical personnel.

"Are you not Mrs. Strombeck, the midwife?" he inquired, shaking the woman's hand. "It is good to meet you, sure; I believe we have much to speak upon."

"Mrs Strombeck's my mother-in-law," said Lily. "And she doesn't really like me very much. So it'd better be Lily."

She grinned.

"I am the midwife, though."

"I beg your pardon, madam; manners are different in my time," Stephen said, wondering why modern folk were so eager to be called by their Christian names, even by strangers. "Curling lessons are no place for talking shop, but at some future time I should like to discuss matters pertaining to midwifery; there are a number of gravid ladies upon the isle, and though I have read much about the modern practice of the accoucheur's art, I have scant experience thereof."

Lily nodded.

"I've got a few ladies with deliveries coming up, and a clinic down in the Hamlet," said Lily, standing up. "Shouldn't be too hard to have a little chat, eh?"

She looked down at the ice.

"So you've come to learn to curl, huh?"

"I shall certainly make the attempt," Stephen said, looking at the ice a little dubiously. "Mr. Lennox is most eager to give lessons, and I should not like to disappoint him. It does not look to be all that difficult."

"It has it's moments," said Lily, with a grin. "And if Lennox proves to be too much for you, I can always show you how to throw a few stones, if you like."
