Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys

Sep 30, 2007 00:39

It had been a hell of a long couple of days. Stu had been focused on Jane, and Jane alone, and hadn't talked much with any of the parade of people who had come and gone. Mama and Lizzy and the Doctor and Chase and all of 'em, they came and went in his periphery. He only saw his pretty little wife in pain and he assured her it'd be fine. Everything ( Read more... )

It was difficult to rouse Jane from her sleep, but she missed the warmth in the bed of both Stuart and the warmth in her arms of Lydia, who had already grown to be such a normal presence. She drew on a housecoat and slowly walked towards the singing. It felt almost freeing to be lighter, especially when she could view her daughter.

"Is she sleeping?" Jane murmured, voice hoarse from the vestiges of sleep.

"Yep," he replied, looking over at his wife. Mother of his daughter. "Should you be up an' about, Jane? You been through an awful lot."

Jane sank down into a sit by Stuart, where she could gaze fondly upon Lydia. "I cannot sleep, not without our daughter," she admitted, resting her cheek upon Stuart's shoulder as she exhaled quite a tired sigh. It was true that she was very much spent, but nothing would stop her from enjoying this moment. "You are a Papa, Stuart," she whispered cheerfully.

Stu leaned over and kissed her forehead softly. "And you're a Mama," he smiled. "I gotta say, this is about the best day of my life."

Abby had heard that Jane had gone into labor and then had the baby, but she'd waited. Jane would have been exhausted, and so would Stu, plus the flood of visitors was probably overwhelming that first day. She knew it was for Eostre and the girls.

Still, she wanted to congratulate him and meet her pseudo-niece, so the next morning she got up and went to the compound for a thermos of strong black coffee and some of the leftover biscuits from Wednesday night's dinner.

When she entered the clearing by the Redmans' house, she saw Stu holding a tiny bundle and singing to it. The image was just adorable, although she should probably not tell him she thought so.

"Mornin', Stu," she greeted him quietly, not wanting to wake the little one.

Stu looked up and smiled at her. "Howdy, Sissa," he drawled quietly. "Get on up here and have a seat, y'hear?"

If he hadn't been so dog tire, he'd have been a little more hospitable, but that was about all he could manage.

"Be glad to," she agreed with a smile, and walked up the steps to settle herself in a chair next to him, putting the basket with the coffee and biscuits down and hoping Kojak and Lady didn't like biscuits.

She looked over at the little bundle in the crook of his arm and smiled.

"Now that's a beautiful baby," she pronounced, smiling at it softly.

"And that is a good lookin' bunch of food," Stu grinned. "You wanna hold onto her while I eat a bit?"

It wasn't really a quesion, since he was already halfway passing Lydia off. A good cup of coffee and a biscuit would do wonders for perking him up.

Delirium hovered outside, unsure whether to knock or announce or sing or do anything. Small squirmy pink things were rather testy when woken she had found and she really wanted to keep her eardrums in tact. So instead she hovered, hopping from one foot to another until she caught sight of Stu and waved at him. "iS she DonE ALL bakinG Inside of dEareST Jane?" Delirium asked, quietly. "caN i pLAy with Her yet or is she stiLL too smalL And squirMY?"

That gal wasn't right, but she was sweet and Stu found himself thinking of her more like a little girl herself. He grinned, calm and easygoing as ever.

"Done bakin, honey, but she's not gonna be much of interest to anyone for a while. She's sleepin' now. Come on up an' get a look," he drawled, nodding to the chair beside him. "She was just born a few hours ago and we're all kinda tuckered out."

Delirium said, as she moved closer to man and baby. Delirium paused to stare at the pair and wondered exactly how Jane had managed it. The idea of babies were a lot harder to understand than she had originally thought. "she's pretty... i pROmiSed janE that i woULD nEVer take hER to my rEALM AND i meANT it. "Well, Stu," the Doctor said, on his way back from the Compound, "we all made it. Her especially." He wandered over, looking exhausted yet despite getting entirely too much sleep. Being human meant circadian rhythms, which he didn't care for much.
