It was, according to her calendar, the day that her pregnancy would have been done, had she listened to the variety of books she had amassed. Forty weeks had passed (and some days in addition) and there she stood, Lydia kicking at the ready, but hardly in her arms as a newborn; she was yet still inside. Jane was beginning to become quite worried ( Read more... )

Overall, Rosie had been finding she was spending more and more time outdoors as she grew more familiar with it. It was odd, she found there were days she entirely forgot to put on shoes, and would simply walk about the path barefoot as if she'd resided on the island her entire life. As it were, there was a certain tree which she was fond of reading beneath, one just not far from the compund, and she was there when she heard oncoming footsteps and looked up.

"Goodness," she breathed, momentarily surprised to see just how large jane had gotten. And still walking around as well! "Jane dear, are you sure you should be up and around? You must be awfully close!"

"I believe I am what the doctors might say 'overdue'," Jane conceded, her eyes wide, for she did not know how else to explain it. Some part of her still believed that she was at fault for such a thing. "I had hoped to see a Doctor while Stuart was out working."

"Oh sweetheart, you must be so uncomfortable with all that extra weight in this heat." Rosie said sympathetically, rising to her feet and brushing herself off as she tucked her book under her arm. "Do you mind if I walk with you? I haven't seen you in such a while, and forgive me, but seeing a woman as far along as you walking around alone makes me nervous. I suppose a habit from living in New York for so long."

That, and she had at least hald a dozen dozen reasons to be concerned running through her mind. Heat stroke, tripping, over exhertion, not to mention actually going into labour with no one around.

"I do feel mildly uncomfortable, yes," was all Jane would go so far to admit. She did hate to complain, yet, and she did keep her mouth shut about the other reasons. "And I would greatly adore company upon my walk," she insisted.

"What is New York?"

I always do like visitin' Jane an' talkin' to her an' drawin' pictures with her an' stuff. Lately though, I been comin' round to see if'n she's had her baby yet. I never did know anyone with a real baby, so I'm 'xcited to see hers when it's here.

"G'mornin'!" I say, seein' Jane comin' out of her hut.

Jane was quite pleased to see Scout, for she could set aside all her anxiety, worries, and pain for the sight of one happy smile. "Scout!" she greeted with good cheer. "And where have you been today?"

"Playin'," I say. "I was playin' outside my hut, an' then I decided to make some new seashell bead curtains, an' then I decided to come see you!" That was a pretty good summary of my day, so far, I'm thinkin'.

Jane was always set in a good mood when met with Scout, so much so that a smile always happened by her face and now was no different. "Bead curtains do sound quite lovely. I would be honoured to see such a thing!"

"Oh my God, you're huge!" Guy greeted cheerfully as he gained in on Jane who was walking (if that was at all the term for the movement) to the Compound. He had come to visit her at times, but usually she was sitting and seeing her afoot and attempting a walk altered her proportions drastically.

"How good of you to say," replied Jane, for she did not quite precisely know any other way to regard such a greeting, so she selected politeness. She offered a weak smile. "It has begun to wear on me, I shall admit."

"So I see." Guy replied and offered her an arm. "It's taking it's time, isn't it?"

"And the time of other children, one would imagine," Jane informed Guy, feeling as though this were a terrible secret to be conveyed. "For I am over the limit of weeks that a pregnancy is supposed to last."

Elizabeth encountered her sister while she was walking about on the path, and fell into step beside her, eyes round with concern. "Are you feeling at all well, Jane?" she asked, hoping that the answer would be yes.

Jane had stopped, her hand upon the nearest tree so she might simply rest in the shade and catch her breath. It was thereupon that Lizzy did find her and she had some trouble regaining herself. "In due time, I should be well, yes."

"You shouldn't let yourself get overheated," said Elizabeth, her tone gentle yet insistent. "It cannot be good for you or the child." Jane must surely be miserable by now, but Elizabeth had never heard her utter a word of complaint. She could not imagine that having a fully-grown babe kicking and poking about in one's insides would be at all comfortable. "Do you think it will be very much longer now? Surely your little one is ready to make an appearance."

"It is the most frustrating thing, Lizzy," Jane aired her thoughts in the air, as though they were simply a casual greeting. "For I was due to give birth by now, and yet, so very obviously I have not," she finished with great hesitance.
